Prosperous Colored People.
While there are downs of prosperous
families of colored people about Abbe--,
ville, who have by honest toil and the
grea est economy, saved enough money
to buy themselves homes we may be!
pardoned for mentioning the names of 1
two or three families who are especially !
Hichani Gantt, the barber, some time :
ago bought a very niee lot and a small i
house, which he paid for in full. Since I
then he has built a shed room in rear and <
a piazza in front of the house, and other- I
wise bratitilied the place until now it is;,
quite a r.eat little homestead. All tins is
paid for by the labor and economy of <
himself and his wife, who is a school (
teacher. ! i
Row S. II. Jefferson, the Providing EI-!
dor of the colored people"* church in this ,
Circuit, is also doing well. Helms rc-i*
centlv bought a lot and is improving the ,
house, and making it appear almost as a
new dwelling.
Lewis Riehey, the blacksmith, hus just
finished an excellent two story dwelling, '
of several rooms. IJv steady application ''
to business and thfl skillful pursuit of his !
trade he has made money, and is ahead ,1
in this world's goods.
But the best part of it all is, these col- (
orod people havo the respect and couti- t
deuce of their white neighliois, and are <
honored by their own race, and in them- <
selves furnish further proof that solf-respect.aud
a little prosperitv will do much ,
for the colored people. They are worthy ,
examples of the benefit to be derived j
from those desirable qualities of cliarac- (
ter that will elevate that race. People of I
their morals and character, are worth .
more than ten thousand educate:! pan-,
pers who may be deficient in the eharac- '
ter for which these lamilicu are (iistiti-' J

Prompt, Skillful, Reliable.
We i4fer by these words to Major John
Alexander, of the Congarce Iron Works,!
Columbia, S. C. For a quarter of aeen-1
turv we Imve bad dealings with liim every
year, and wo know whereof we affirm J
when we say that in all that time he has
never disappointed us once or failed to be
fully up to any emergency, whether as I
regards promptness, skill an a mechanic, |
or fair dealing as a man. If our readers
do not want more than these qualities, woi
recommend them to John Alexander ev- j
ery time. If anybody would like to see j

look on some of the farms on Hard La-[

The Coronaca High School. \
From private sources we learn that the
Coronaca High School, under the maii-i
agemcnt of Prof. Miller, has been open- j
ed with the mast flattering prospects. >
Among the large number of pupds pres- i
I ent at the opening of the school were sev
cral advanced scholars. Prof. Miller Is j
oue of the best teachers in this county,'
and every mother's son or daughter in
that neighborhood should receive the i
benefits of his tuition.

As Rich as a Jew.
Mr. Benj. Lichtenstin, once a salesman
in the store of Messrs. Israel & Brnssel at
Abbeville, has prospered since he loft this,
town. He is row a member of a firm
which counts its money by tho million.
That firm is the largest 'manufacturers of
cigars in the United States, and Benj.'
Lichtenstin is a millionaire.
O
Good School.
We aro pleased to learn lhat Verderv
has a good school. Prof. Pvles opened
last Monday with twenty-seven scholars,
nnd tho prospect of a considerable increase
in tho number. Prof. I'yles comes1
highly recommended and we have n<>
doubt that he will prove a most excellent
teacher.
Auction of Merchandise.
A large and varied lot of goods of every
description will bo ottered at public
outcry next Saturday at tho store of VV.

Mr. John Wilkerson and Mr. William

They were soldiers together in Mexico,
and had not met since the late war. They
are fast friends, and fought their battles

Rkv. J. R. Music, of the Associate Reformed
Church, has located in Abhevillo,
and will live in the house of his brotherin-law,
Mr. ?frolin A. Devlin, and Mr.
Devlin will go to Due West to live with
his children who aro beintc educated at
the Female College,' V\ e are glad to welcome
Mr. Mnsejif our community, while
wo are also glaa that Mr. Devlin does not
leave the county. After Mr. Devlin has
educated hi* children, we know that he
will return'to his beautiful home, which
id one of/the nicest in this vicinity.
THE/uedge in the rear of the Episcopal
Churon yard has been cut down?the
growth of* twenty years. The misfortune
of freezes, the work of ill-timed trimming,
and the sturdy blows of the ill-advised
axeman, it Bcoms, will soon destroy
that moat beautiful ground, of which the
numbers of that congregation have so
long felt so just a pride. Is it not little
less than sacrilege to lay violent hands on
one of the most pleasing ornaments of
the town ?
j Mr. D. C. Snodcjrass lias a fine lot oi
mules at Messrs. A. M. Hill <fc Son's lot,
which he is anxious to sell at most reasonable
prices. It is always economy t<
buy a good young mule. In about twenty
V ears after making such a purchase a
i, ' . ' gudgeon will come along and pay tin
original cost of the mulo when it is nearly
worn out.
The personal property of the estate o
John White, deceased, was sold las

F. i'or Pre** a ml Jlnnm-r:
Soni" weeks ngo I wrote a short article on
j tin- above topic ami promised lo write anoili'
er. but llinl that 1 have delayed so long that. 1
| have itlmosl forjt'dten the line ol' thou^hl
which I intended to pursue. Most, ol' what I
will say applies with ns much force to the pupil
who expects t?? finish oil' in tin* academy
us lo l lie one who will have the ait vantages of
a colhiriatc conr-e. And right here I will
stale a conclusion at which I have about arrived,
and thai is. thai the hot course which
J that class of pupils who expect to complete
! their education in the academy can receive is
j to adopt preei.-ely I he same course which they
j would follow were they prepai in;: for college,
in other words, prepare themselves for college,
though they may never enter it. Two
reasons support thisconciusion. In the first
place. I think ll will stand upon its own mcr
it. As an academic c"lir?e simply ami wiili a
view to success In praciical business life, I
think it will compare favorably with any
: other. I know sueli a couise h;<s some formi|dal>le
opponents who arc ready to exclaim,
j "Why waste two years studying l atin and
| Greek wh? n that time coti'd be no iiiiicIi more
profitably employed in sludying lest hooks
i which would be of practical service in life?"
llere the advocate of Latin and <Srcck is apparently
floored l>y an answer which covertly
assumes (In* very point InaKpstlon. It is
, true, that in place of these tfrad languages,
one mi'.'ht study chemistry, or sieolojjy, or
Molllliy, lilll won HI III* .v in - mi j- mm ii > > in

I mind as well? Would they teach you to
learn to express your thoughts iit language
j marked by its tl lsc-ri m 1 nut iii-.t nicety? Why
the study of Latin un<l Greek contributes
i much to your power of expressing your
thoughts, ami J utii sure whatever improve:your
language is intensely practical.
But I am aliout to orntl the other reason. It
is tnis: There are very few school children
jvhowecon select out mid speaking ol them
j individually, say that they will never receive
a collegiate education. Because when a boy
is twelve years old there is no prospect of his
I receiving the benefit of a college training is
j not conclusive pi oof that he will never tie so
highly favored. Time brings to pass many
i. changes and a kind l'rovidencc has conferred
tlie advantages of a liberal education upon
i many a boy whose poor parents never dreamed
that such good luck was in store for him,
! And then look at the number of self-educated
men?I mean those who have paid their own
I way?and how many more would there be
1 did they not have to go back to the very ru
dinients and study the Latin and Greek ali
pliabel ? But enough on this point.
. In the first p'ace, if you desire to prepare
your childien for college, patrotiize the verj
best school you can. Hi uember that chcui
! schools and cheap teachers are very dear ulti
mately. (jet the best teachers in your owr
community if possible, but if you can't ge
r tht-m there, go elsewhere. They are absolute
' ly necessary and their importance cannot bi
t over-estimated.
I In the second place, patronize the sanx
