Notes From the Town of ttradley.
Editor* I'rc*s unit I!'inner :
You have often asked me to write something
for your paper, aUont the Augusta
and Knoxvillo railroad, its progress and
prosperity, and what I thought of its
ultimate success. I always felt that I
had an important part to perform. There:
were plenty of mou to do the talking and |
writing, while those who were willing to
lend h helping hand to push on the enterprise
were like angels visits, few and
far between. Hut, Messrs. Editors, in
the midst of discouragement and opposition
of almost every character, and in
spite of the prediction of false Prophets!
the road readied this place on yestctdav,
at 2 o'clock i\ M. To put a stop to the I
useless clamour that has l?een Koinj; on |
almost ever since the work eommeneed
I will try and yivc you a correct state- j
ment ol the condition of tiis ri ad at this j
time, its present workings and future
prospects, and first, the main thing is
money, and of that important factor we
have enough to complete the road to
<*reenwood,all t!io timber necessary for
its construction is oil the road and paid
for, trestling and water ways are nearly
all completed. Onr only trouble is getting
the iron for the track with the neceshi'V
fixtures and finding clamps, bolts
and spikes. Whilst there may have been
some mistakes mado 111 the fore part oi l
last year in not laving in a good supply I
of those things in time, for tho last four!
or live* months I knotc everything has]
been done that could liave been done to |
net a supply and keep item hand, the
fault does not lie for that period of time
v ith theollieers of the road ; there is sr>
much demand for Railroad iron that it is
impossible for the foiimluries to supply
it promptly.
To show you wo can work when we
have the necessary material to work with
I will give you the result of one days
i perations. On last Thursday (.'apt.
Twiggs Superintendent and Chief Engineer,
being in charge of the work personally,
laid one mile and three quarters of
track with the following force: One
engine and train, one engineer and lireman,
one Main hand arid lillv-eiirht hands
i>u the track. The iron was hauled from
seven to eight and a half miles ; the road
bed was leveled op, the cross-ties laid on
the track, three water ways put in. The
material necessary to d> tlin was three
hundred and eight thousand pounds,
ten thousand pounds of spikes, thirty-nine
hundred and sixty cross-lies,
weighing over half a million of pounds,
making an aggregate of eight hundred
thousand pounds or thirteen thousand
two hundred and twent-nine pounds to
the hand. I guess it would be very hard
to produce a parallel to this. If wo could !
only get material to work with, the road
would be completed in a few days.
The prospects of the road arc flattering.
Even now in its half finished condition
it is earning a thousand dollars per
month over current expenses. Fine
quarries of granite are being worued on
tuc line <>i me r >a>i, a iow urns 01 itiuiiganese
will coon be opened and ready for
shipment. Almost the entire line of the
road is lined with wood ready for .shipment,
nil <>f whii-h finds a ready market
in Augusta, livery few miles along the
road little towns ami hamlet* are springing
np; evidences of improvement and
thriit appear on every .side, and what a
lew years ago was almost a desolate ami
uncultivated waste, is now beginning to
bloom and hlossotn as the ro>e. And
now, Messrs. ivlitors, let me say to you j
ind through you, to inv fellow citizens:
Let us not slack our hands I lit pres.* on I
the good work. The Valley lload is yet] '
to be built and must ik* Imilt. so is t lie j '
Atlantic and French Broad, and so is the
Spartanburg and Laurens, then let our;
people cease their wranglng about petty ]
lines and grievances, and with united
hands and hu n ts to work and complete '
all these enterprises. There is no fairer
land nor better country than old South
Carolina. Let us go to work like men I
and make her what she is capable of be- \
ing made?a model State in every re-1':
speet. * j |
I am often asked why I am so anxious i
to build a road to Augusta. There ure
several reasons. Her merchants arei
pleasant and high-toned gentlemen, she is |
rapidly becoming the leading manulac-m
tilling town of the South. Thedayisnot
far distant when she will manufacture all i
the cotton that can be taken there, and it
will bo much better for the producer to
sell his cotton directly to the manufacturer
than to a middle man and pay ex-|
penseson it to Fall Kiver or Liverpool.
Augusta has also the tine>t Hom ing mills j
111 t!ie Smith, <>ne <>f the great needs of
our community, and with her presentj(
rate of giowth, she will soon have a hnn- ! *
died thousand inhabitants, that will give
us a market tor everything, we can |
rai*o IV->111 a bale of cotton to a black- |
berrv. She is also in close connection
with three of the best ports on the South
Atlantic. ~ Charleston, Port Royal and
Savannah?these are some of the reasons
why I want to go to Augusta.

C. & G. R. R. Co. Against the Landowners.
Editor* rrcM <iyid Banner:
The last issue of the Press and Banner
contains an editorial headed "Needless
Tears," which suggests the propriety of a
short article, giving yon further information
on the same subject to which y< u a lude.
I am aware that editors kiii>w all!
about "building railroads, organizing ar- j1
mies and commanding navies," as you i
incidentally remarked in your comments!
on the progress of the A.tfc K. Railroad,
but still you must admit, there are some|
tiling* editors don't know. The issue be-1
tweett the (J. A <i. R. R. Co. n.n<i the lan<!owners
along its routv, is not one of sen-;
tiinent to eventuate in "tens,'* lint it is.
an issue of stern justice. I will notaf-l
firm or deny the right of the company i
here (in the absence of a tribunal with!
jurisdiction competent to setlW the matter)
toany given area, but I do affirm that
it has no right to use private pn perty
without compensating the owner theieior
to the full extent of its value. The C. A
<i. K. li Co. has assumed the right to cut
down all timber within 100 feet of the 1
centre of their track and have entered J
upon the execution of their work. They '
have gone through the lands of many of!
those who did not protest, in some in-1
stances they have bulldo/ed the parties:
into stibtuissii n by threats of suit if they i
interfered with their employees but >n[
eveiy instance where they have met w.th
it resolute opponent they have gracefully
retired and left the trees unfelled. Now, |
Mr. ICditor, if the com|>any greatly desir-1
ed this thing for improving the appear-j
| mice or enhancing the value of their prop- ,
erty, which is tho only eifeet tli.it could j
i rtsult from it, would it not have been I
jiiiiieh more equitable and just to have
! lirst negotiated with the land owners for
1 a reasonable compensation for the priviI
lege of cutting their timber? . Such, however,
is not their policy. This tin ,vh i
rantable assumption is an outrage on the
j rights of private property, and the people j
| are justly tilled with a spirit quite differ-,
'ent from that in which etfuses itself in I
!"tft:irs." If tliM enmmiiiv wjw mailn to
I>ay, as it should, ii round price for every j
j tree cut, it would also have a more enli^hted
sense of the rights of others?such
a course would be a urood ir.oralix.er, don't
| you think? There are some other matters
about the conduct of Railroad com-I
| panies which it is questionable whether!
editors know, of which I will inform you
i in some future communication.

lx.jii, ami from ilial time till now carried on i
successfully by myself. My friends amicus- I
turners will bear witness 01 the large and stu- s
pendotts jobs executed by me. It was at my
works where ttio largest and almost only Job
of its class ever executed in thisclty wasdone,
viz.: the making of tiie pipes for the City
Wator Works in the year IK5.S. In the branch
of BIOLL FOUNDING, I can say that I have
made the lamest bells ever cast, in the State,
such as the bell lor the City Hall in Columbia.
My stock of piltetns for ARCIIITKCTUUAl,
WOISK. CtH.UJi.N'S for Store Irotits. Is |
largcand various, and in KAIIJX(iS for Balconies,
Gardens and Cemeteries I have the
largest variety and most modern patterns;
many of these are patented and I have purchased
the right f*?r this state.
In the machine line I c;in furnish inv'pnirons
with STEAM ENGINE* and BOILERS <
of any sizeand description. My CIRCULAR
SAW MILLS have rallied oil' the prize at every
state Fair held lu this city, and lu their
constiuetion I have taken pains to combine
simplicity with the most useful modern improvements,
and may Matter myself that my
CIItCUl.AU SAW MILLS find favor with every
sawyer who understands his business.
The many orders I am steadily receiving for
SUGAR CANE MILLS prove that the public
1 appreciate th<4 mills of my make, and soitls
with my OEARING for III>RSK POWERS,
(ilN WHEELS, GRIST MILLS and other
MACHINERY.
I have the manufacturing right of many
PATENTS, such as castings for ROCK CUTTON
AND IIAY PREsS and three or lour
different FEEL) CUTTERS and other Implement*.
I will be pleased to send my circulars to any
applicant, together with price list or estimate.
My prices are moderate, and I assume the pub-1
