The Weather and Crops.
Nothing could be lovelier than the weather e
we have had for the past week* Mild, warm
and beautiful.lt Is the perfection of Indian
Summer weather. The only objection to It Is ;
that It found most of us in winter garb, and 1
some of us are afraid to make any change into
lighter clothing. Cotton still keeps open- t
ingvand this is now the middle or November, i
Those who had oats early sown ore now rejoiced
at seeing a lovely stand. The recent f
froeU had killed most of the flowers, but still *
the gardens produce enough for table bouqfteta,
and roses are not hard to find. The
woods are arrayed In all tho gorgeous and 1
varied coionagoi meruit, me cureiuw ui
cold and beat which we have had of late hpve icombined
to produce the most brilliant tihts
oil tbo decaying foliage which we have ever

Good Collections* i
Treasurer Perrln reports this as the largest
collection ever made. He had Issued up to B
k the time of closing his books 7,489 receipts.
There are very few delinquents this year. ,
Our merchants express a very favorable fl- 1
hanclal condition of their customers. Nearly
all have paid up In lull, and many have c
tnoney for investment. We heard a merchant
say a few days ago that he bad hot seen as v
touch money durihtianyseason for years. All
this Is very gratifying Indeed, especially when
it is remembered In the Hummer during the a
drought that our cotton crop would be utmost
an entire failure. Somehow cotton always fc
comes In on the "home stretch." We will
never again believe that It will be a failure.
Plant cotton and sow oats if you would get
Nch.
Kayember the Thirteenth.
Every patron of the Cherry Hill Nurseries [ '
is reminded tbut their trees win oe in a one- *
vlllo on November 13th, and every one is expected
to call promptly that day and get his a
trees. The Cherry Hill Nurseries conduct a
large business, and a successful operation for o
twenty-five years shows the appreciation of
their patrons for the trees and plants received ?
They not only propagate the best selection of *
fruit but raise largely of roses and evergreens, o
These gentlemen claim the production of
healthy, hardy and thrifty trees, all of which a
tire earetully cultivated and thoroughly ripen- ?
ed. Which are much more valuable and deBirabie
to planters. t<

The Champicn, Without a Lookout
Comes Upon the Octavia End 01
End ? Statement of the Octavia'i
Captain.
Philadelphia. November 8.?The ship
1 Lady Octavia, which was iu a collision witl
the steamship Champion, has arrived here
Iter captaiu reports that he left Delawuri
Break water at 8,30, a. m., Thursday. At 4, a
m? Friday, 40 milel east by north, half north
from Cape May he was run into by the steam
er Champion, from New York. The Cham
plon struck us Just aft, stern. The steamei
was so badly damaged thai she sunk in loui
minutes. Thirty persons of the crew anc
passengers were lost, and twenty-four savrc
and placed on other vessels by the Octavia
The first mate of the Octavia, James Fergu
son, was in charge of the deck at the time o
the collision.
Captaiu James Johnson, of Greenock, Mas
ter of the Lady Octavia, makes the following
statement: My 6blp arrived at Delaware
Breakwater from Rio Janeiro for orders on
the 23d of October, and sailed from New York
about 10 o'clock on Thursday night last
About a quarter past two o'clock yesterdaj
morning, when we had sailed about thirty
miles, the collision occurrfd ; the night Wat
clear and warm, ihe moon shining brightly
We were moving at a rate of 8% or 4 knots
per hour when my chief mate reported u
cAmnmr iihixiH III mlniitnc hffnrn Mia ui-elrlpnl
happened. The steamer continued on hei
course and I on inlne and we approached
each other, but immediately before the crash
a man on tiie lookout of my vessel reported
the steamer's starboard light from our bovt
and then she shifted and her part light became
\Islble, slio, wiug she had turned on hei
course: We had a man on the lookout con
stantly, but there could have been no lookoul
oti the Champion. Iier captain, Lock wood,
subsequently told me that lie had altered hei
course a moment before the collision, but assigned
as reason for doing so, that he did nol
see my ship, which indicates that my idea in
regard to the lookout w:is correct. Indeed,]
was informed that the man who should havt
been in the lookout was alcft loosening a bail,
The ship sank in four minutes after the collision,
and there was a terrible panic. I ai
once ordered the boats lowered; In fact, they
were in the water before the steamer wen I
down. Two of her crew Jumped on board
my vessel at the time she struck. In all thirty
persons were lost, among theiu the first
mate and five women; twelve of the missing
were passengers. I mean to say that the vessel
came to us end on end. There was no possible
means of avoiding her. It was impossible
to tell the extent of her Injuries, she wenl
down so quickly and there was so much confusion.
Pour passengers and two of the crew
were sent to New York in a bark that camc
alongside, but I did not get their name or tne
namu of the vessel they are on. When the
Oetavla reached Green street wharf one ol
her tugs left her. and subsequently It was
learned from the boatswain of the Ootavlr
that this tug contalued Captain Ixickwood
his passengers and crew, and that all were ai
'trwta fcibon t/\ Vlnt.h unci firPPM flntlOl
nnd left for New York.
