An ancient prophecy;
Hid for its truth, sir, 1 will vouch
Before I ^Ive it thee.
kn Indian Sybil gave me this
Deep in a gloomy grotto;
5ho found it in the track, I wis,
Of Ferdinand do Soto.
'I am no scholar, lint I know
That this was writ in Spanish,
'or with us spirits down below
Linguistic troubles vanish.
'But that you might its words rehearse
With oa-e to old and young, sir,
I've done it into rhyming verso
And in the vulgar tonguo, sir.
'She told mo I must keep it till
Thv devi! trod my grave, sir,
Vt last you've come; I do her will;
Hero is the gift she gave, Rir."
He pulled the musty parchment out
From his sepulchral pocket,
\nd while I turned it round about
He went oil' like a rocket.
Bewildered by the vision grim,
Homeward I hied in haste,
\nd by my midnight oandlodim
The curious scroll I placed.
[ read the wondrous paper through,
I saw its meaning clear ;
S'ow I present it, friends, to you
To gladden vourXew Year.
