Tnis community was startlckl last Sntila.v evening by thcanuounceniont that r 'Sheriff Mr.* J. Y. To this he pressed entire willingness, but in orr that he might make some small coitions due the office, asked that the itter Ve postponed until the following )nday, which request the bondsmen idily granted. )n Thursday, Aug. 22, in pursuance of <iovornor"- orders, lie left Abbeville in j-ge of JefT Davi i, to deliver him withiie walls of tlie penitentiary. Not itwas thought of his absence until the owing Monday. On Tuesday a telem was sent to Columbia enquiring for n, when it was ascertained that ho had to off on the Charlotte train. Then it h supposed by some that he had taken rentage of the excursion rate to spend] tav or two at tho White .Sulphurj rings, while others thought it within! ! range of probability that he had tied! country. All doubts, however, were j noved on Saturday evening by the re-1 tion of a letter post-marked Cincut:i, confirming the worst fears, by say; thati ho would never come hack, 1 that he contemplated going to nada or across the ocean. He sent back | i combination numborsof the safe lock, ich was opened that night and in ich was found nothing hut a few small j 3 hills, and a letter addressed to "his :e friends''in which ho vaguely inti-l tos that lie may " have been robbed " his ^official money. lis liabilities in the office as far as as-1 tained, is ahont $2,500 for which hisj idsnien are liable. Jones is about twentv-fonr years of and is one of a large fotnilv conneci who have borne an excellent cliaraefor honesty, and ho himself had a 4 reputation up to this disclosure, was elected to office in 1876, was considered as a representative of "Young l3einocrac3T" in Abbeville nty, and before the time his dcfalcabecame known it is supposed that Ilould have received as many votes lor pe as any man in the County. osh was never considered a Soloman, ho was by no means an idiot or a luic. Though his departure may have n under a fit of mental alteration le persons are inclined to think that re was considerable "method in his j dness," and as proof of this, atten- j I is directed to the following facts:' Monday before ho left Abbeville, hci ? notified by some of the bond>men ! t ho must make an exhibit to thorn' lis funds; that same evening he bor- j 'ed two hundred dollars from Mr. j in A. Devlin and about the same time j oeted fifty dollars of cost from Mr. ! \V. Lawson of our town. On Thurs- i he was to take JelF David to Coluin- i Tho night before starting, ho went j he office, and wrote letters to various ties, and the letter to "his owe] nds.'' These letters were locked in safe. II that may be said as to the amount j wMnh ],r> tank with him is i re conjecture. Some believe that hej ried off a largo proportion of tlici ney, whilst others believe that he was bed, but the letter addressed to "his 1 ? friends" seems inconsistent with the I er view, as it speaks of "wrecking a I rd, ame." A good name is not' ?n "wrecked" by suffering from rob-; y. II." on the Situation. Our political programme for the, campaign of 78 has been struck off. The nominees are in the lield, designated, set apart, as it were, for the contest and the hope is ardently cherished that victory again will compensate our affair next November. It becomes us as a party to centralize our strength upon each one of them a solidified body in principal and let dissent ion and dissatisfaction be entire strangers in or midst. Bury all animosities and enmities in tho grave of oblivion and let unity of purpose, harmony and 1 good feeling reign supremely. Let no such uncouth and unprineiple expression emanate from our lips, I'll "be damn"' or "dad blame"' I'll vote for this or that man because he did so and so: I contend, if we omit or discard any of our paaty nomiinccs in our suffrages at the general election we contribute support to the Radical foe, or deposit a vote in his behalf, and, perhaps, in this way an enemy might again get an official position. OMI to Iia l-ol lopMrm of men who, on the same questions think alike. They arc bound together not by devotion to this, or that man, but by their agreement upon certain principles^!' political action. In order to secure success they must act together. The object ol conventions, and making nominations is to lind out the general opinion of the party, that is what principles the party is agreed upon, and what men can best bo trusted to carry them out. Primary election is designed to a (lord an opportunity to every man to exentise tiio right of enfranchisement according to the dictates ol his own conscience and, in this way to ascertain the true sentiments or voice ol the people: and I contend, if a member of the party strives to carry his point?to try to elect his favorite individual in the primary election and be defeated and from that fact, "go back" upon the party by not voting for a certain one of tinnominees that rightly secured the majority of the v?tes, when the general election approaches will act the part of a traitor to the cause of Democracy. The primary system is commendable, but is badly, hlmcntubly abused bv treacherous tricksters. it is nothing but natural for delegates who are to take part in a convention, or men who vote at elections to have their preference. Uut unless they go to the convention or polls ready to yield something, they are not suitable, persons to represent their party. The whole thing resolves itself into this we must support, as a party, the elected nominees, beyond all prevarications or equivocations and it is not inconsistent to an honest sincere individual conviction. Judging from the long catalogue of names locality recommended tiicre was quite a variety of opinion prevaiing as to whom was the most suitable or available men to till the respective otiices. Amid so much good material .Messrs Editors, it is a very difficult matter to concentrate unanimously upon the same men hence, let us regard those that have obtained the nomination, not us the only best, but among the best. Let the aspirant who have been thwarted, reconcile themselves. Let no one become offended but acquiesce pleasantly and agreeably to the final result of the primary electioii. Let us direct our resources, combine, and with energy, and march abreast in a solid phalanx to the front, ready to overcome every opposing obstacle that may present itself. Our redemption is too dear and precious to be capitulated. O. P. IT. ?? Public Meeting. Bv order of the County Club a grand ratification meeting and rally of the democracy will take place at Abbeville j Court House on September 14th instant, j Governor Hampton, Lt. All the voluntoer companies and organized bands of music in the county are respectfully invited to bo present. lion. John C. Maxwell will act as chief Marshall, who with his assistants will preserve orrlor and assign to their positions the different organizations as they arrive on the ground. Full programme of proceedings to be published next week. Coine one, come all, without regard to race, color or previous condition. Let us by united action carry Abbeville County bv an overwhelming majority for the party, which, true to its pledges, gives "a government of no one race, of no one class, but of the whole people of South Carolina, without limitation or restriction." S. McOOWAX, County Chairman. Information Wanted. Editors Press and Banner: The question has been asked, and very properly too, whose duty is it to make the move towards sending relief to the yellow fever sufferers of New Orleans, Memphis, Grenada and oth| er places, and now Messrs. Editors, I ask you the question. Isn't it the duty of the town authorities to call a meeting of the eitizens that steps may be taken towards contributing so nothing to the aid of our sick and suffering fellow country-men? Is it not the duty, also, ofj the Christian churches to move in this) matter ? What is our religion if we have not charity ? It is nothing more than the blowing of an organ, and the going through the form of Psalm-singing, and the uttering of faithless prayers. If Abbeville, Christian Abbwillo, with her several Protestant denominations, and her highly intelligent population, is what she professes to bo, then she will surely send something to the fever-stricken cities of the West. When the hearts of distant Europo aro touched with sympathy, artd the sectional prejudices of the North are laid aside, I sav when they can contribute, can we, who are bound by ties nearer and dearer, close our purses, and turn a deaf ear to their pleadings for help, and contribute nothing? If so, then our religion is nothing but a form. lAst us, then, call a meeting and respond to their appeaL KXQUIRER.
