Tiio Way of Transgressors is Jlard We publish below the short but fai from simple annals of poor Miller, aliw Thomas, really John Iiaggs Hopper As Captain Miller, agent of the Soutiiori Life Insurance Company, ho is wel known t<> the inhabitants of this count} and of this State. Of all insinuating agents he wast ha insinuatingcst, Rathei goodlooking, of winning manners, and o considerable accomplishments, ho math a good many friends in this neigh borhotx several years ago, and induced some o those most opposed to life-insurance no only to insure intho shaky Southern I-iile but to take stock thorein. Laurons count; has a wholesome remeiwbrauec of him having last sixty or seventy thousanc dollars' by his help. Hd somtimes all'ect ed tho pious rote and sung in the churcl choirs of the towns ho Was working And a capital .singer he was, How vouch ingly he used to sing *'The beast bowoc down with weight of woe," Poor Miller President Hays, through the Attorney General, h;is received a request for tlit proper j*apers to extradite John BagsH'.pper, now in jail at .St, John, New Brunswick. Concerning this preeiou.* rascal, who w.us so well known it Charleston under the name of John H. Miller, the Springtield (Mass.) Rcpublican has the following: The arrest of Johu Bairgs Hopper, alias John Miller, Muj. John Thomas and Charles Chapman, at St Johu, N. B., tin. other day, for forgery, brings up tho career of a very remarkable swindler. Springfield knew him under the name of 'Plum-ill* ntul hi. h:w ".IfiMfv' \mv Kn<' land verv thoroughly. 11 ore he put up principally at the Ma<sassoit House but afterward was at Mrs. Evan's boardinghouse. Ho sought to know our "best iKK>j)le." was a patron of several neighborhood pariies ami picnics, his picture js said to hang in the display made before Model's gallery, and ho made tor a time altogether a conspicuous figure in the city. Ho* was huro for quite a stay last January, and returned again iu the early maimer for another little visit, ile came sometimes to the Republican editorial rooms to read the Southern papers, talked interestingly of politics, and was altogether a fascinating person. Thomas is perhaps just turned forty; of medium height, stout build and little inclined t" be portly, weighing ab ?nt two hundred pounds. His head is shapely with an incipient bald spot around his dark hair, which is cut short, but not close, lliul has a little wave in it. His complexion is healthily florid, and he wears a handsome dark moustache; his eye is bright, his manner l'rauk, intelligent and attractive. So much for the num. Ilis career o! crime and scandal has been industrious and eventful. Ilopper was born iu Queen Anno County. Ma., where ho married a Miss Miller, daughter of the local minister. by whom he had two children. Just before the opening of the war he forged heavily, doserted his family and iled South." After the war he turned up at Augusta. <ra., having assumed the name of his deserted wife. Miller, as we must now call him, was agent for two insurant e companies which lie swindled in a dozen years out of ahout by forgery and embezzlement; he also married another wife, b}' whom ho bad live children. Miller linally passed forged no.e.s on James G. Bailie <fc Bros., intimate friends mid left Augusta. He next turned up at Xo x Orleans, and, with the help of a pal, victimized a Catholic bishop out of &5<),G(w He is thought to have gone thence to California, but turned up in New England last January. He lived handsomely at the Boston Revere house, and came to .....i ,.;?v .i? \r.mm,. He was a'soinowhat notable attraction at Martha's Vineyard last season, being accompanied by a young and stunning woman who claimed to be a rich Butt'alo (N. V.) widow, and the pair gave /he most elegant entertainments possible. About tins time Major Thomas won the confidence and money of a Sprin^tield drummer, and ho proved a "lady-Jailer*' to the disgust of a certain gentleman from this part of the country, it is said. It is also tuought that he was concerned in the big diamond robberies that took place at the Vineyard about this time, Hut Th- ma-; was recognized by an Augusta ilia.) loan, to whom he explained that he asMimed his present name because lie was living with a woman (pot his wife. The swindled Augusta parlies were notified, and the chase after tho forger began which has just ended in his capture. Those who knew Thomas in thjsVity siy they are not surprised at his great success as a rogue. He had a most retentive memory, was accomplished, btudiously polite and carefully agreeable. He rather overdid tho business at Jirst, .so,as to bring suspicion upon himself, but soon dispelled it with great art. Of course there are people who now sav thev al wavs knew him to ht) u villain, lint the <iegree of confidence that Thomas everywhere inspired swiiis to Jjunvu been no ions remarkable tJiau the success with which he carried out Jus crimes.
