Death of T. XV. Coogler.
v Again it is our sad duty to speak of the
ravages of death. Since our last issue
the great destroyer has again visited our
community. T. W. Coogler died at his j
residence last Saturday morning at five
o'clock. His deatli had been looked for,
for some days. He had been in tailing!
health for twelve months and had tried in |
vain by change of air and recreation to be I
cured of the bronchial aiiecuon tunc ai|
last proved fatal. Ho spent some weeks I
at the mineral springs at Little Mountain [
in a little cabin he had constructed for |
himself. He returned to town about two
months ago. Ever since then he had
been gradually sucoumbing to the insidious
disease.
The funeral took place at Mr. Coogler'8
house at three o'clock, Saturday afternoon.
The unusual number of our townspeople
that assembled then was a touching
tribute of regard to the deceased and
of deep sympathy with his bereaved family.
Kev. Mr. Wightinan and Rev. Mr.
Pratt conducted the services. He was
buried in Long Cane church yard.
Mr. Coogler was forty-six years of age,
and had oeen railroad conductor for
twenty-three years; on the Greenville
and Columbia for twenty-one years, and
two years on tho Abbeville branch. Few
men were more highly respected by their
fellow-citizens. He was distinguished
for the faithful discharge of bis duties,
and in his constantand pleasant attentions
to passengers, he commended himself
to the grateful regard of his employers
and the public. He will long be missed
on tho Abbeville branch, and on the I
streets of Abbeville. High and low, rich j
and poor, all liked Mr. Coogler, and will:
long rememler his pleasayt smile.
He was connected witJ# the Methodist;
church of this place, in whose commuion
to died. He leaves a widow and live
young children to mourn the loss of a
devoted husband, a kind loving father i
and a hard working, upright bread-winner.
The Fatal Affray at Doonaldsville.
The following frtcts were ready forpubllca- :
tiou last week, but were unaccountably 11
omitted :
The quiet little village of Donnaldsville
was thrown into a state of great consterna-11
tion and excitement on Saturday evening, i
loth lnst.au!, by mi omirroute that ended In i
the death of a young white man. It appears
that on thatday the two young men, G. Wal- ,
ter Johnson and Press ley Taylor, had di tiered ,
about somematterand high words passed between
them. Towards evening Johnson ,
started home in his buggy and had proceeded
about C0t? yard* on his way out of the village.
Taylor followed on horseback until he over- 1
took him. For some reason or other Taylor 1
stopped Johnson's horse, seized hold of the
bridle und turned him round Into a ditch. |1
Johnson drew his pistol. At this juncture
Taylor jumped off his horse, picked up a
jitoneund threw It at Johnson, striking him |
on the head. Almost instantaneously Johnson
flred his pistol and shot Taylor In the j
breast. Taylor picked up another stone, but
was shot a second time In the breast. l!oth ,
shots lodged in thv region of the heart, and 11
wither would alone have proved fatal. Tne |:
unfortunate young man died In two or three j
minutes alter the sccond shot. An inquest
was held over the body t>y Trial Justice Henry
Young of l)ue West, at Donnaldsville, and the
juryreturued a verdict oi ju.-tiflable homicide.
The affray took place In broad day- 1
light aud was witnessed by three men. John-1
son has given bail for his appearance at next
court. no was sngnuy injureu on me ncuu:;

docosed was twcuty years of age, unmarried,
mid lived near Honea i'alh. Johnson lives

The State Fair.
t>ur Stato Fair this year was a great success.;
It began on Tuesday of last week and lasted ;
till Friday. Columbia was thronged witli |
visitors. The most distinguished were Gov.
Zeb Vance, and Mr. //. P. Kimball of Indiana.'
They both made admirable speeches. One;
.great sensation at tue Fair was^the military
competition. The Governor's Guards of Colombia,
gained the fonr hundred dollarpretri- I
;uid. Tho Butler Riflemen, our //.>dges com-}
puny, gained the one hundred uollar premium
as the best drilled company outside of
Charleston and Columbia. The races were I
.numerous and exciting, ltoun Arab, a trot-|
tting horse belonging to J. D. Pace of Hodges. j
was among the winners. The exhibition at;
thte Fairgrounds was excellent In all departments.
The Ball glveu by the South Carolina!
Club was held In the state House, and was a
magnltleeut affair; over four hundred guests'
attended. Altogether the Fair of 77 was worthy
of the State, and was a proof of our political
regeneration.
