Xo one however, knows better or can ap- ,
prociatc more highly, than I do, the eapahili- :
ties of the. people of this county. They can.
by united effort, accomplish any thing short 1
of impossibilities, and I know that the matter
in hand, is not an impossibility.
Whereftire I appeal, with con tide nee, to all
classes of the community, to unite in making 1
the approaching Fair which is to be held on '
tbe-'5lst instant and the 1st and 2nd, proximo,
a signal and splendid success.
Distinguished guests have been invited and
are expected to be with us on the occasion.
The exhibition has been postponed, until
the week before the State Fair,that there
might be no conflict with our neighbors In
the counties of Greenville and Anderson,
who will find the Abbeville Fair a convenient
resting place on their way to the state
Fair, and who are cordially invited to unite
and contest with us.
Tho Grangers of the County, whose numbers
aro only equalled by their zeal and enthusiasm
In the cause and matter of agriculture
are expected to do much, in this their
favorite department.
The Mechanics and artisans of this and adjoining
counties, whose skill has been "hidden
under a bushel" have now an opportuni- '
ty of letting "their lights shine."
"To the Ladies no appeal is needed all experience
proves them foremost in every good
work and cause, and 1 only beg them to see to
It, that In this honorablo and generous rivalry,
there be no laggards amongst their best
friends, brothers and sweethearts. A novel j

The premium list, which Is liberal, will bo
paid out in money, which Is easily convertible
into some thing more valuable than the
"Pinchbeck" premiums, which are sometimes

Confederacy. Only the presence of the sue- *
cesser of Maxcy Gregg was needed to make >
the grand gathering last night complete.
A bero of two wars. Gen. MeGowan served,
with honor and distinction, on the ensan guiued
fields of Mexico. In the piping times
of peace lie was a Major General of Militia, i
l"])on tlic secession of South Carolina he drew
"the sword which flashed like a niftinr amid i

ered along side of the broken shield of the
Confederacy. (Sen. MeOowan went out with
"the Fourteenth South Carolina Kegiment, and

of Maxcy Gregg, he participated in the tights j
aroutid Itic-Hmond, at Second Manassas, Ox
Tlitl, JIarner's Ferry, Holder's Ford and
Fredericksburg. On the death of his lament

commandingpresence, he was a conspicuous
mark Sr>r the deadly missiles of the enemy, i

tthrwugh the breast. He did not relinquish '
command or retire from the Held until comixrtted
to do so by loss of blood, mid even then
le stopped to cheer and encourage his brave
oomjianlons. As soon as his wound had sufficiently
healed to permit him to return to t he j

back with demonstrations of Joy and i
(affection. During the closing hat tics of the ]
war Gen. McGowan was placed In command
of two brigades, and his courage shone far in
the front of the deadly fight. At Sutherland
{Station, the last struggle the brigade had l
with the enemy, he made a noble stand, and
for several hours hold in check, with his two }
brigades, column after column of Federal ;
itroops, only retiring when completely flunked
by a Division of the Second Corjis. Ilis
command retreated in good order and were
kept well together, and on the ill-fated morn- \
Ingof theitth of April they presented a hold
;?nd unbroken front when the sad tidings I
were borne on the breeze that the peerless
Lee had surrendered his spotless sword and
;the heroic remnant of hlsarmy. ^
CJcn. McGowan was fulrl.v worshipped i\v j
;his men. They had the most unbounded con-11
tidenee in him. In battle ho seemed tolio in- J
'sensible to fear. Danger appeared to be his
favorite element. And yet he was us gentle
and generous to his soldiers as he was daring
when his clarion voice rang clear and loud in
the midst of the fray. Bold, stern and inflexible,

the flame of battle, he would dismount, when
:the rtcht was ended, and kneel, with quivering
lips and tear-dimmed eyes, by the lifeless

'The Judicial Committee has recommended ;
: establishing of County Courts, and if the .
people don't take steps to prevent it the

chance. They have tried the County Court L
system foralotiK time, under Democrat rule, t
and It has proven a burden too heavy for (
them to carry, and if it has proven burden- ,
some to the small Counties of Georgia, u hat I.
will it prove to be to us, with our Counties,
which are three times as large. The fault ?
now Is not with our Trial Justice Courts, but I 4
with the laws for the punishmenl of petty j,
criminals. Let the Legislature establish the f
whipping post or chain gang and you will r
tfoon see that these Courts will become selfsustaining.
Let them also raise their Juris- c
diction, and repeal the law not requiring i c
cost to be paid in appeal cases, and you will, r
And that many petty cases will be kept out
of'the Courts of Session, and Common Pleas I f
and thereby larger amounts saved to the;,
County annually. On the contrary if the j
County Courts are established any one with a 0
thinking mind can see, that in afew years; /
this lmpovished County will be financially .
mined. Now is tho time to put a stop to this I r
evil and not after the law has been passed ,
establishing the Courts. REFORM.

Fairs, in accordance with rules of the satne,
will he transported to the Stat ion from which
iriginally sent, free of charge, and theamount
paid for their transportation to the Fair ri1funded,
on presentation to the Agent to whom
such amount was paid.
.S. These rules will be rigidly ndhered to,
Articles sent to either Fairs named will uot be
transported to another Fair frw of charge, in
lieu of being returned to Station from which
originally sent, but the payment of freight
required in each ease, as above named.
