Ivhen the sharp encounter commenced.
The question discussed was?"Is Timej

p MR. .TOS1I l" A Y. .TONUS

pie is a good writer and a ready speaker, I

occasion he said:

and at the eleventh hour he came in;

low those who had prepared themselves
to argue the question to iro forward. He;
simply argued in general terms, and
merely "harked" the subject, without!
giving his opponents a chan.-e to strike at;
him. His argument was confined to the;
rlovtrovinir effects of time unoii the ani-!
I final, vegetable and mineral kingdom ; I
[said one ol' the commonest errors was to
[regard time as an agent when in reality
it was nothing and could accomplish
nothing; that we used it as a general term
or compendium* expression to denote
those active causes and agent* which act
slowly and hnpcrceptablv npon the ma-1

next followed, who had a well written
speech o;i the negulive side of the one -
tiou. Mr. Graydmi is a promising young i
lawyer, a good logician, and a forcible!
and etl'eetive speaker, lie s];oko snli-i |
substantially as follows: j1
All things urc divided mi ' material
and the iiuiuHteriaJ. '1 inn; may crumble ,
the monuments of human greatness, may
destroy the forms of materia! objects,
may resolve the m into their constituent']
atoms, but it is in accordance with the
teachings of philosophy that not a single

ed by time. If on the other hand \ve|
iook at tiit? immaterial, we shall see thatl
time operates upon it only as an improver.! ]
Take lor instance, mind in the abstract, (
human reason ami we shall see that time
has stividily improved ii l?y teaching it to ]
adopt everything of good and to sltuu[(
the errors, mistakes and follies of the :
part. Look, too, at the effect of human !
reason upon the civilization, that is thoj
moral, intellectual, and physical iin-ij
provemont of the world. X<< one will |
deny that the improvement in morals, ast,
well as in literature, science, and art, lias |
been very marked and decided. This is
more particularly noticca'ole in what wel,
denominate the useful sciences. No one
will contend that the telegraph, the rail-j
road and the steamboat arc an improvement
upon the post-horses, stage coaches
and sailing vessels of former days.};
These improvements are tiie direct in-j
, 11 uenyo of time, acting as it does upon '
hum m re is m. Tim;eann?t affect im- J
material things except as an improver, J,
and can only destroy the forms of material
objects, but can not destroy their sub-1,
MA.T. T. M. (JAMMIIX |'
was next introduced, and ho went to!\
work with a will t<> refute the arguments j1
which Mr. (Jntyden had presented. The '
Major is a Little Giant, ami indulged in some
humor as well as solid argument. 11
We thought ho was going to tear up , <
what little ground ho seemed disposed toj j
leave for Mr. C'ason to stand on. i ]
lie contended that there is nothing in ! t
the world that can ntaud the ravages of,
time; neither is there any finite power in ' |
t!ie universe of (.Jod tiiat can he preserved |
from these ravages. All the glory and |
grandeur of the world must yield to the!]
victorious tooth of time. .Time, like' y
death, is an impartial conqueror. Tim it
civilization of tlic Jews, the* ancient | (
Greeks, and the llomaiK, lets all been!
swept away by the steady onward inarch1
of time, and consigned foiever in ti.e
mausoleum of ages. Tine' of itself can j
work no changes, but is only the period j
in which man and the natural elements];
operate. These aireneies. man ami tlw.
elements are greater as destn?yers than )
us improvers. Therefore, time thus con- ,
sidered, is greater as a destroyer than as (
an improver. Philosophers say that ,
nothing i- destroyed, Imt only changerl j
into something else. Thistlieory may he! i
true, hut material substances are des-j.
troved to all practical purposes, and in i
this light we intend to discuss the (pies- j |
tion. Civilization lias only changed,
ground The places once occupied by:;
the grand old palaces and temples, the*
monuments of arts and genius, are now
occupied by a few mud hovels, who in;
morality and learning are far below the !
Indian in his native state of civilization, i
and we are now sending the <?ospcl to the
same nations who sent it to us in the ear-!
lv centuries.
SAMUEL C. CASO.V, ESQ.,
now came upon the stage as the last ora-1
tor of the evening, and after replying to j
some of the Major's witticisms he pre-j
sented the negative side of the question I
with a clearness of thought and enthusiastic
earnestness which was entcrt:ii?ii?ir>-:
ami convincing. He said:
That the creative power was greater
than the destructive. This is a proposi- |
tion that needs no proof?it is an axiom. '
Kvery improvement of time was a crca- I
tion ; a development that was superior to j
that force which was necessary to its i
destrtueion. That only the material j
things were destroyed. In truth nothing
is destroyed. It is the philosophical
view of tins subject that the atlirmative I
arc so much opposed to. It is a sharp'
sword, piercing even to the dividiuirj
asunder of the sophistry and argument of,
the speeches of the atlirmative. Is it the i
material things of the world that consti-j
tute its greatness ? Is it the collossal col- j
nmns and magnificent temples? rather, I
is it not the works of the mind that present
themselvesand claim superiority over I
every thing material? Matter is nothing
when compared with the mind. The,
works of the ^reat minds have not been
destroyed. They have come down to us j
tnrougn me ages, enaiienging the great i
iconoclast timo to destroy thein or to;
break their j>orfect image, ami have* re-1
ceived the impress of the nineteenth:
century. As to the general improvements
of tirno. The discoveries in the useful
* sciences are marked and of great henelit
to the world. vVlio doubts the usefulness
of ihe power of steam? Wo need but to
mention them. See the man of our time,!
walking alongside the Hashing lightning!
I
that plays along the e lge of .Tehoval
pavilion, discovering the mysteries ai
I elements of electricity, and then '1
hold t'i great purpose; ii subserves. T
i'eelini' 'patriotism and heroism arc
true as ever. We need not 1 o<
tot' i and the Roman phulan
nor ' it' < >M <iii ird, beneath o
own ?..<n ?.,o we heboid them. We s
them wiln a full knowledge of a <!re

makes them superior. Yes we s
them in a cause that now li
*' buried, deep hidden beneath
stream of heroes, blood." The allirin
tive speak of the magnificent temples
< J reeve, what temple have we reared
their stead? The mystic and magnilice
temple of womanhood, which has for i
chief corner stone not a massive ston
but virtue, and the goddesses that tend i
vestal altar, are purity and modest
We shall worship at tiiis temple. Ai
now in conclusion one argument iu lav
of the negative is incontrovertible vi:
The onward march of the true religio
It is a truth that sinks deep down in
the human heart. It is a truth that w
stand upon the very grave of tiinecrvii
where now is thy victory 0 time ai
thy destroying power? and not route
with this triumph, will arch its sniokii
battlement and "break upon the sple:
dors of eternity."
