Honoring the Dead.
Mr. J. K. White, of Greenville, S.
C., is in this county with a cement
that mends broken crockery, glass,
wood or any thing else, making it
stronger than it was before it was broken.
On Monday last he went to
Long Cane Cemetery and mended the
broken toomb-stone which marks the
foiita llirt (liiut- of r.ioilf ir
I"\V. Selleck, the gallant officer who
first raised the Palmetto flag on the
walls of Mexico. Several years ago
the simple marble slab which marks
his grave wan broken by a falling tree,
and it has remained broken on the
ground ever since, until Mr. White
put it in its proper place on Monday
last. This work, we believe Mr.
White performed, at the suggestion of
Mr. T. M. Christian who bore the!
expense.
New Lamp Chimneys.
The glass works in Brooklyn are
making glass that won't break.;
Their lamp chimneys can be used for!
driving nails into boards, and can
stand cold water when heated, with-j
out harm, while their plates, thrown
into the air twenty-five feet and fall-j
ingon a brick floor are unbroken.
What n blessed thing it would be fori
this community if Mr. Lawson, or Doc- j
tor Parker, or anybody else, would
bring just a few of those chimneys
this way. But they won't do it, unless
they are willing to go out of the
lamp-chimney business in about two
weeks.

The health of the place was never bet- j

and we should be pleased to see Al>be-!

Will You do it.
Will our friends plant a full supply
of corn and other things necessary for
the sustenance of man and beast?
We never cati be independent until
this is done, and we have had experience
enough to convince us of this
fact. "Cotton and credit" have been]
the curse of the country and will continue
to curse it until they are abandoned.
