The Press and Banner. ' ' ' I Wednesday, Dec. 6,1876. Highway Murder. A BAND OF NEGROES LIE IN WAIT AND SHOOT THEIR VIC- \ TIMS IN THE NIGHT. ! MR. CLAYTON ALLEX KILLED. Mr. Theodore Baker Wounded. I -The Negroes Flee from Jastice and ; Vengeance. The NeighbQrhood Greatly Excited.! v , Searching for the Criminals. This community was shocked on yesterday at the reception of the intelligence that a most brutal murder had been com- j mitted in the town of Lowndesville in the killing of Mr. Clayton Alien, an entima-| L-le young man of "that neighborhood, at j the Presbyterian church of that town, aoon atler dark on Monday night. The! town of Lowndcsvillo was thrown into! an excitement and alarm that night which t had been hitherto unknown to this usual-1 ly quiet village. Early after dark the tir- J iug of a volley of musketry was heard in j the direction of the church, and soon afterwards the killing of Mr. Clayton Allen j and the wounding of Mr. Theodore Jiaker, was known to everybody. Tt uAAtn<4 Mr. Allen and Mr. Baker were riding 011 horse-back, and us theyj' passed the,chnreh Mr. Buker observed[ the negroes and called Mr. Allen's atten-! tion to thein, as they stood some twenty , feet to one side, and before Mr. Allen hail j j time to reply, they tired, instantly killing Allen and wounding Baker. Allen was t hot through the body twice with large ' musket balls?one of which is supposed ; from the location of the wound, to have ' gone through the heart, lie never spoke I after he was shot. Baker was shot with < small shot and he will liKely recover. No cause of malico on the part of any negro towards these gentlemen is known, ' and it is supposed that they would have ; shot at anybody who might have passed, < or it may bo that it was they who had < just rescued a prisoner from the calaboose, | 'and that they thought theso gentlemen to be pursuing them. 4 Reports differ as to the number of men , who wero engaged in the murder, but < none of the reports lix the namber at * fewer than five or six, while some reports claim that there were more. J No positive clue up to yesterday morn i ing had been ascertained as to the perpc- , trators of this tienrihh crime, but one | man had been arrested against whom , there was strong suspicion. * Tho murderers left on the ground a mask, which it is thought some of them ' had worn, and an axe which they in their 1 haste neglected to take with them. At a late hour Monday nighs Capt. John i | I'. Brownleo was notiliod of the fact, and he at oncse set out to organize a force to go ' ia search of the criminals. At last at:- | counts numbers of white men were tra- ? vorsing the various sections to which it was thought that they might most likely < ?eek rofuge. j Wo would urge our citizens, in case they capture the crimiuaLs, to al'osv the law to take its course with them. With 1 us tho law is different from that of Edge- I lield. In Abbeville we have all tho forms > of law?a good Solicitor and h Judge who ( is willing to do his duty. For these roa- , sons we trust that they may not be lynch- j O'l. If wo had not a good administraiion of the law, we would say, hang them to tho first limb. 1 Since writing the above, a courier who ( arrived from Lowndosvilleyosterclay eve- ; ning reports that the whites now know j the leader of tho band and that the negroes to the number of four hundred in J arms have gathered togothor to resist the ? arrest of the murderers. Who would think o! * of opening a horse-race with prayer or ' of calling on the Author of our being 1 when commencing a game of baseball. There is an appropiate time for , all things, and we think prayer meet- ( ings, political gathering-; and Legisla- . tive assemblages should be entirely , separate. We regret having made the omission as no officer elected on the new ticket will more faithfully oj more honestly perform the duties of liis office than Mr. Wier. Mr. Wier is well known to our people and highly respected. We trust that we may always have officers as efficient and acceptable as the new School Commissioner will be. Lethe School.?Miss Lilly While, of this Village, who lias been teaching the Lethe School for the past twelve months, gave t-nch entire satisfaction, that "he was recently unanimously reelected teacher of that shool for another scholastic year. A higher compliment could not have been paid to an etlicient teacher. Mr. J. M. Mr. Razor had been afflicted | for a long time and for the past twelve months had been confined to his bt*d. His life adorned a spotless character, and a christian j brother and neighbor has gone to the reward which is in store for the right- 1 eous. Peace to his ashes. The experiment has been Hied on what is called the South Pass, and has proved a perfect success. That the plan will, in every particular, end in a perfect success cannot be longer doubted, mil to Captain EaiJ, who originated it, should be given great credit.
