IJ Laurensville Female Collegia?Colonel 1 Farrow's Address-Concert. c ' ' i Editor l*ress and Banner: c Seeing your very full account of i f the recent Commencements of thejs Due West Colleges, .and knowing j' that manv of your readers takejj great interest in such things, I have t thought that a brief notice of what t oneof your sistercounties contains, ' and of what I saw and heard there, t' would not be unacceptable. Some of your subscribers may 1 not know that there is at Laurens 1 Court House an excellent Female College, having an able corps of , ?lwi froressors* 1>UIUIC HIV ai , aim ( when the Laurens Railroad was in ] running order, this Institution was i one of the most nourishing in the State? numbering at times near two hundred pupils, but since then, and j especially sir.ee the railroad has failed, she has not been in so prosperous u condition. Owing to the 1 latter barrier, she has had to depend principally upon her own county for pupils. Last year she had on her rolls near one hundred pupils; this year not quite so many. The collegiate year is divided into two sessions. The first term of the present year closed on the 17th ult., and the second will end the last of December, at which time will be the Commencement. The last day .of the session is one long to be remembered by all whpjsp good fortune it was to be .present. On that day Col T. S. Farrow of Spartanburg, who had bee.n previously invited, favored his audience with an excellent address on "The Duties of the Hour," which w?s .well received; but the most attractive feature of the occasion was the grand concert given by Dr. Anisanscl, and the young ladies of his department. Mr. Editor, I cannot speak in two high terms of the manner in which the youug .ladies acquitted themselves. Think tor yourself how difficult it - * n P 13 tor three or tour yonng perionuers to play on different instruments, and keep exact time. Yet there were five pianos going nearly all the time, and sometimes two at each; for all this, and with long 1 difficult pieces there was no discord, nor seemingly the least con- | fusion. Every piece was listened ( to with the greatest atteution, and , a number of them were callcd for , the second time. For the benefit I of those who take interest in music, I will append the names of the i pieces played: ' fart i. i 1. The day is gently, ctc.,?Song. 2. Valse Galop. 3. Beautiful Star?Song. 4. Medley. $. Martha?Song. 6. Caliphe. i 7. Convent Bells?Song. i 5. Coricolo. I'ART IT. 1. Bird of the North?Song. 2. Polka Mazurka. 3. Beautiful Love?Song. 4. Marseillaise. 5. The Song of Birds, ctc.?Song. 0. Silvery Waves. 7. Echo?Song. 8. Piano Solo. 1 9. Chant we Now?Song. Of these I would call especial 1 attention to the three, instrumental 1 pieces "Caliphe," ("Polka Mazur- ( ka," "Silvery Waves," and the j song "Chant we Xow." The of- ( feet of all these were most pleasing. | The concert was a grand success, \ and reflected great honor on tlie < young ladies and their superior teacher Dr. Anisansel. I On the following day I was kind- i ly .showed through the college < building, by the Rev. J. R.
