Judge Mackey's Charge.
Judge Macfcey, at a recent term
of the Circuit Court i'or York
County, urged upon tbe Grand Jury
the necessity of making strict inquiry
into the official conduct off
County officer?. He said i?
In the opinion of his Honor,
York County is peculiarly fortn-l
liate in having an honest body ofi
public officers, who are faithful in
the discharge of their duties, which
v
'exception deserves the special no
tice of the Court at a time wheal
robbery and plunder is the rule in
every official department of the
State, without exception, and when!
official corruption stalks throughout
the country. By lodging derelict
ulf&eers in jail, and prqperly aided
by the Grand Jury, his Honor
hopes to check the march of cor- ,
mption in the judicial district, and
preserve in its purity the benign j
system of government wisely designed
for our people, but which
was brought into disrepute by the <
corruption of those who adrninis- l
ter its affairs. Of the enormous i
taxes paid for the support of public I
schools in trie state, witn xuc ex- ?
ception of York County, all such j
schools in the State would probably
be closed by the 1st of May, in face {
ot the fact that ?300,000 had been (
collected for the purpose of keep- j
ing them open. Xor is corruption j
confined to this one feature alone. ,
So notorious is the corruption i
throughout every department of s
the State Government that it lias <
attracted the attention of the whole s
civilized world. This corruption
can only be checked by prompt action
of the Courts and Grand Ju- *
Ties of the respective Counties, i
Which, in the opinion of his Honor, a
can wield the necessary power; but c
6hollld they fail, so far as the speak- v
er tras concerned, he should feel it ^
to be his duty to tell the people to
check it by the might of their own
arm& 0
