J JEJdityr Abbeville Press and iaruicr : DfAR: Sir:?Wo arc not disposed to Jet the celebration of out* ancient and honorable order, on St. John's Day at your yiflage pnss by without some manifestation on our part as ' i8t?f"iLodges and brother masons. T can only speak for tho brethren in the southern, and south-wcs*ern portion of our District,,atid hope brethren in other sections may not bo fount! wanting in adding their testimony to the high appreciation of the address of oar worthy and honorable Brother 'Thomas Thomson and the kindness And brotherly feeling exhibited by the brethren of Clinton Lodge 5\o. o on that day. The whole affair from beginning to end was a complete success. The .day wall not -soon be forgotten and many will cljerish the fond reoollec tion that they were there and Welcomed witb warm accord. Say we. Well done, brethren of . Clinton Lodge. TJhe attendance was much flmallfcr tKan "was expected. This was owing to the busy season being on hand, and as the most of our order Are "Wdrkera" fonnd employment "operatively" nearer home. Brother Thomson made one of his ibappiest efforts?and although he stated at the outset he was not r>re pared to do himself or the subject justice, from .pressing engagements, provod conclusively, that his Masonic structure had not been erected with <;untempered mortar and that the teachings he bad received from our -saereu orfier iiau oecn lougeu in a "fattbftil breast." lie spoke from the lieart to the heart, and told in dear und unmistakable terms what Masonry was; its antiquity, its universality, its utility; and closed with some good advice to our order; and it is our sincere desire that his words anay be as good seed sown upon ,good ground. I tio not feel competent-Li* f*ive even-an outline of his T - - O - ?bl,e-address. I would be glad to see it in print, but for the benefit of tthose who were not fortunate enough <o hear it, will cite his exnmplo of what i's Masonry I If you will read said ^(J, in Saint Luke, 10 chapter, and from 30 through 37 verse, and tell who was neighbor to that man, it hat will give you an idea of what AlasoDry is. Masonry teaches us to f 1 - 1 1 1 _ 1 regard lue wnuie uuman raco us our .brethren. So much for tho address After the address wo were marehicd. down to tho Fair Grounds, and there enjajod one of the richest barfeoeued dinners I ever eat?roast pig, 6 .roast mutton, hash and vegetables of { all kinds, and a full supply of icod lemonade. The tables were sprosd in the building and the brethren vied J with each other who should bo the ( most attentive in waiting on the ta- i blca. a bappy day and long ' to bewymeroberhd. : After gi**ng you some far mi' g } items I will close for this time. Our 1 farmers have very . nearly conquered ' Geneial Green, and the warfare has been waged hot and heavy. Crops are looking tolerably well. The followiug letter frcm an esteemed correspondent at Pickens Court House, pledges that section to a full co-operation in behalf of this enterprise: Pickens C. H., S. C., \ June 27, 1883. / Editor Press and Banner: Dear fcfik: In your last issue I discover a card from 0. G. V'anderhoof, Engineer, for the Narrow Gauge Railroad from Northern Gliio to the South Atlantic by way of Warm Springs, N. C. The Sassafras Gap in Pickens county affords the best crossing in the Blue Ridge range of mountains and then through Pickens, Anderson, Abqeville and Edgefield to Augusta and Port Royal. We believe that is the proper route for this great trunk line, and that Chicago and Northern .Ohio might unite ou this ronto from Lexiti^ton. Kv.. with brunches from that point to Chic-, ago and Lake Erie. Pickens is alive to the importance of the projsct and desire the co-operation of Abbeville and Anderson. Let me hear from you at once, and please give me the address of Mr. Vanderhoof. You will perhaps recognize my signature as one of your compeers in the Legislature of 1866. Respectfully yours, TllOS. Editor Abbeville Press and Banner : Please publish this in order to correct a mis-statement which inadvertently occurred in the last Presentment of the Grand Jury. It vrns stated that the amount of money with which the Judge of Probate is chargeable, to wit: ?2,974.88, was deposited in Citizens Savings Bank of S. C. This is a mistake.
