Commencement at WilH&mstou?Inter esting Exercises. * Editor Abbeville Press and Banner: Some twelve months ago there ap peared in the columns of the leadiDg tip-country nowspapers a short no tice to the effect that the exercises of the "Williamston Female College wottld commence on the 1st Monday of February of tho present year, un der the management of Kev. Samuel Lander, as President, aided by a com petent corps of assistants. Tbi?, Messrs. Editors, was the first intima tion that any one, save those who were immediately interested in it, had tLat such an enterprise as a female college at Williamston, S. C., was in contemplation. The institution was opened at the time stated, and, strange to say, with so very brief a notice, there were enrolled near seven ty girls during, the first week of its session. This unprecedented success can only bo accounted for in this way, first, that the President is a well known, experienced and most success ful teacher of girls, and secondly, the location of the college is in a place whieh enjoys many advantages, both natural and otherwise, over most places where are established institu tions of learning?facts which thoughtful and prudent parents are At. DOt ape to ovenooK in me matter 01 the education of their daughters. This institution completed its first scholastic year within the last week, and it was the writer's good fortune to havo been present on the occasion of the commencement exercises. The programme was as follows : "Wednesday, November 13th, 7 P. M., sermon before the Young Ladies' Christian Association, by .Rev. R. L. Harper, of Anderson, S. C. Thurs day, November 15th, 10} A. M., ad dress bofore the Brosophic Society, by Prof. J. Wash Boyd, of Abbeville, S C. Thursdaj', November 14tb, 7 P. M., closing conccrt and graduating exercises." t On Wednesday evening as the train in which we bad taken passage reached the pretty little village of Williamston, thero was falling a cold sleety rain, and as we looked oat of the car window and saw only some dozen persons present at the station, wo began to think that it bid fair to bo a pretty tame commencement, and to tell the truth wo felt a little "cheap." Bnt patting on an air of indifference, as if it was a mere acci dent tint we were there, we ventur ed out. We were met at the door of the ticket office by that princo of R. It. Agents, Dr. McK. with his gen ial smilo and a hearty >(come into the fire," which, together with the assu ranoe on his part that, there was a treat ahead for all lovers of good mu sic and pretty girls, to say nothing of tho varied exercises of a literary character, that was to form a con spicuous part of the entertainment, went far, very far towards cheering us up. At the appointed hour, the rain having ceased, we repaired to the college chappel to hear Bev. Har per in his sermon to the Young La dies. As it was some little time be fore ho made his appearance, we bad i an opportunity ui uA&ujiuiiig iuc tastefully decorated Hall. To do jus tice in the way of description of this, requires a more facile pen than ours. At the one end was erected a rostrum some three feet above a level with the floor, which was beautifully festooned with evergreens intertwined with flowers of $very hue, which we never dreamed were any other than those furoished by the bounteous band of nature, until a rude blast of wind and the. rattling of the window sash re minded as that even the last rose of summer had long since "wasted its fragrance" and forever disappeared, and thereupon making a closer in spection wo-found that these were all artificial and that art, practiced by the cultivated and refined taste of lovely women, bad been made to sup ply-the place of nature. Presently our attention was arrested by seeing qnitaa youth in appearance ascend the rostrum, and learned that he was the; man of the occasion?the Bo v. Mr.: Harper. He immediately com menced by prayer which was qaite shortand plain, and there being noth ing striking about bis appearance, we confess we anticipated nothing fVom him, And felt no doabt like oar elbow neighbor, who was 'prompted to ask if that was the best they could do. He' took as his text the reading of the 16th and 17th verses of the 1st chapter of Rutht and then closiog % bis Bible, preached one of the finest, most beautiful and appropriate ser mons we ever listened to. He took thexcharacter.of Naomi and held it up to these'young ladies as one such as (bey should ever strive to emulate. Held welt upon her loveliness of char acter aa a private citizen of sooiety, as 4 representative of the church and as ;& servant of the living God. Of her leaving her happy home in Beth, lehem of Judea on account of famine which was in the land and dwelling ten long years amid the inhospitable and ragged mountains of Moab?a stranger in a strange land, surround ed by a fierce idolatrous race who had every reason to regard those of her race with ihe utmost antipathy; of her .sorrows and afflictions in the loss of her husband and two sons, and of her consequent deprivation and want, and how amid all this, whtoh was enough to have soured the sweetest temper, she lived a blame / less And a consistent life, such as even her enemies conld not find fault with. In conclusion he advised these young ladies to so livo that at least some one would be the better for their havinjr livpri nr?H nnmnnpflri -- o ??j ? r those young ladies who were th? thoughtless votaries of fashion witl the little girl who, sitting upon, the banks of a beautiful rivulet with a large boquet of flowers would ever and anon cast one ioto its sparkling waters and laugh gleefully as they were being borne forever from her sight, unmindfnl of the fast diminish ing supply, until she has cast the last one away, then bursted out with the bitter cry "bring back my flowers, bring back my flowers," but the only response was the echo of her own nlaintivi* vAir?*i "Krinof hnnlf mxr Ann?. lJ ~ " ? to -? J era." Bat to pass on ? the next morning, Thursday. the 14th, the weather still being unpropitious. it was feared that there would be a slim turn out to hear the anniversary ora tor, Prof. J. Wash Boyd of your town, but when the hour at which he was to speak had arrived the Hall was filled to repletion. Prof. BoydV subject, as we understood it, was "Wo man's usefulness commensurate with her mental culture," and although we dn nnt. nrpRiimn t.n hfi a inHcra nf hiwIi r- ? ? j o ? ? matter;, we will say that his speech impressed us as being the production of one whose mind was stored with n fund of varied information, and if there was any fault to be found with it at all.it was that it was almost too diversified?requiring something of a mental strain to keep pace with him His delivery was fine, bis articulation distinct, and bis effort, upon the whole was such, in our humble judg ment, as he might well bo proud of. But so far we have had but a 'feast of reason," next comes the concert, col loquies, dialogues, &c., which indeed produced a "flow of soul." Thus far man has been the chief actor, now comes the scene in which woman in the cxercise of lier heaven-given powers?in her most lovely aspect takes the most conspicuous part. "We should like very much to give you the programme in full for Thursday night, in order that you might see ihe fine discriminating taste as dis played in the getting up of this en tertainment, but the already too pro tracted length to which we have drif ted warns us against it. The weather by this time had become fine and the morn came forth in all her resplen dent glory, and consequently there was quite an aquisition to the num ber that had been present heretofore. Not anticipating any difficulty in procuring a scat, we waited until the time at which it was announced that the exercises would commence before we went down to the Hall, but when . ? - J ll* * 1 ?A we reacnoa mere it was wjin mo ui most difficulty that we squeezed in at all. After the distribution of pro grammes, and the noise and confusion had somewhat subsided, the entertain ment was commenced with the open ing chorus, "We comc with gratitude and praise," sung by a half dofcen or more lovely girls. Then followed in alternate succession, for at least three hours, songs, colloquies, and instru mental pieces, such as would have charmed the most savage heart; -and so completely fascinated us, that the time glided by as if on golden wings, unperceived by us. We never have been present on an occasion of this kind where every one sustained so well their part, but there wero some whrk tnnlr n. nnrf. nn this nopjisinn whose performance we think is de serving of special notice, therefore, at the risk of being charged with making invidious distinctions, we would state that we were peculiarly pleased with the performance of Miss Lander, Miss Hutto, Miss Nicely, Miss Sharp, and Miss Pinson, and think that they gave evidence of the pos session of musical (and as to tho latter two, wo might add, theatrical) talent, of no mean order. Miss P. in the vocal duet "A. B. C." was?well to say the least of it?inimitable; and in this connection, the Junior, I would say, the next timo you go down in the neighborhood of Ninety-Six, try and get a sight of her, and if you oknnl/^ nn/l /I nn'f fklnlr 4 liof fiKo'b 9iivu1u) ttliu uvu u tuiua IUUV cuv u charming, then we will be iorced to conclude that at least "you are not up to snuff." But I know I have already occupied too mnch of your valuable space, so I will close by stating that the whole affair was a complete success; and, in our opinion, the three youcg ladies, Miss Lucy Pinsonj* Miss Ella Calhoun, aud Miss Julia Zeigler, who were the graduates on the occasion, as well a* those who may graduate in after years, may well be proud of their "alma mater." So no more from Her. Treatment for Horse Disease.? We give the following recipe which we find in the Turf, Field and Farm, furnished by a correspondent in Buf falo, which has been tried with suc cess and pronounced a quick and speedy mode of treating the epidem ic : 1. Feed warn bran mashes twice a day, and take the liquor of boiled flax seed to mix with the mash. 2. Two ounce of spirits of nitre, mixed with luke-warm water, one ap plication daily. 3. A little pure whislcoy daily to stimulate, say a nan pint. 4. Liniment for external applica tion on throat?one-third hartshorn, one pint of sweet oil. 5. Sponge the nostril with a solu tion of salt and hot vinegar : also, wash tho month with a solution oi the same. Blanket thoroughly and a little exercise daily. Wet the haj> with vinegar. Jl PPLICATION will be made at th< L next session of the Legislature ol uth Carolina for an Act to open a pub* lie Road leading from Phoenix in Abbe ville County by way of Cothran's Old Mill, to the line of the contemplated Greenwood & Augusta Railroad, at 01 near Benjamin Chiles' on the new cut Road, THE RESIDENCE Recently erected by DR.
