Montreal, "Dominion or Canada ) Province of Quebec, July 'JJi, 1S7J. j Editor Abbeville Press and Banner : Remember that I aui writing with the hope of giving pleasure to those who kave not enjoyed the opportunity oi' travelling, not for those who have. 1 find myself constantly saying, "A man uas no ngnt to spend so much time and money upon himself alone,?J and if I had the peculiar tact and power of the reporters of some of these Northern pa pers, I would send you something start ling at least; but as it is, I will do the best I can! As one enters the dock at New York, he is disappointed at the wluu ves?they seem unworthy of such a city?but as you look up and see the street before you, you are actually astounded! What a crowd!! The street cars, omnibuses, wagons, carts, carriages, and every kind of vehicle that you can imagine, (and some that you never conceived of;?men aud animals?press upon each other so. that you wonder how they are ever to become extricated. But they have learned to do it, and have been taught patience by experience, and they gradu ally, without a single collision, manage to get along. The horses seem to learn exactly how near they can go to another vehicle, aud twist in and out in a won derful way. Having been resuced from the hock man by my young friend, I followed my; Charleston* acquaintances to a hotisp.1 kept upon the European plan, that is, you hire your room and take your meals where you please?"the Mai.son Doree." j Every one of our friends who had trav-j elled recently advised us to avoid large j and fashionable hotels, where you paid J for "the name," and advised us to go | either to a house like the one named, or to a private house. Board at the hotels from $3.50 to $5 a day?at a private house from $2 to $2.2-5. The Maison Doree was admirably located for one who wished Jo see the New York world, at the junc tion of Broadway and Fourteenth Street, opposite Union Square. Union Square is a beautiful, open space, with grass and trees and pretty walks, where people can sit and lounge! in the coot shade. Just before me was a | veryf fine bronze, equestrian statue of, "Washington. Every time I raised my j head I saw the fine, noble image of the] patriot. On the other corner was a statue of Lincoln. I passed it often-] times, but I uever had the inclination to look up at it. To me it seemed un worthy ef the place, and I did not care to have unpleasant recollections revived. \Vp tnnt nnr moolo ' 5 .. ? <?i> t? muiiinuil, auu : found ournelves surrounded by blacks. A Southerner who found us there, said to us, "I know why you men have come here! because you have black servants." It was not thai, but in truth they are better waiters! I had never been in one of those im mense cities before, and everything was novel. Such a rush of people, nil hurry ing along its if they really knew the value of the moments. If a man would allow It, the store windows would occu py all his time. Indeed, I remember'to have heard a joke upon one of my kins men, that he started out after breakfast and was found, pretty late in the day, not very far down Broadway, having spent his time at the windows!! It is not that you see a dozen magnificent and immense buildings, but turn your eye in any and every direction, and you nre still amazed, and filially pass them by unnoticed. You cannot pass by Stewart's new re tail dry goods store, however. ] t looks as if it were built of white marble, but it is in reality of iron, painted like marble. Think of "a whole square of iron, six stories high ! As you go in you feci as if you had entered a small city, such a variely meets you r eye. The head clerk,' us he appeared to be, seemed to recognize I us as strangers, and came up and showed us around. Then you walked into a nice little parlor, the machinery was put in motion, and you found yourself apparently standing still, while the store commenced to go down, down, down!! In reality, of course, you were elevated from slorv < .? each beautiful floor in turn, devoted to its particular branch in the business. Here they were making carpets. Here were 6'JO girls sewing for Hie store, &c., &c. In this building is everything that the imagination can think of in the dry goods' line, and should you desire it you could curry your family in and have everything that man or woman wears or ruses about them, made at once to order. Hlewart has a, very large "Wholesale House," and is building a home for the girls of his establishment, fitted up with all the modern improvements, where they can live at a moderate rate, and have baths and everything necessnrv for health. These girls are paid for what they actually do, not by the day. It requires SUO clerks and employees to do the work of the retail store alone. Stewart has built a marble palace foi himself, but there it stands, empty, un occupied, while its owner lives opposite in a fur inferior house!! lioports (ani3 I feel that a Christian man is on danger ous ground when lie begins with re reports), say that the contractor wlu built the house, found that lie was to b<. ruined if he continued his work, am plead with Stewart to release him. H< refused. The wife went and plead still In vain. The man was ruined and his wife died, and he vowed that Stewari should never live in that house!
