Editor Abbeville Press and Banner : As I am not known to all the citizcn of Abbeville, some of my friends sug gest the propriety of publishing the ac eompanj'ing letter, from an old acquain taneeand valued friend. Fearing tha it might have the appearance of egotism I have hesitated, and only consent now that the people of Abbeville, whose suf frages I ask for the office of school com missioner, may know something of mi antecedents. I have not the time no; taste for personally soliciting votes. I elected, I can only say, I will try to dis charge the duties of the oilice to the best of my ability. Yours, &c., JOHN F. OSBORNE. Copy of a letter from the Rev. Wm. G. Hard: Augusta, Ga., \ July -0, 1S72. j John F. Osborne, Esq.: My dear sir: I see by the newspapers that you are a candidate for school com missioner of your county. May you succeed. I think your habits eminently fit you for the position. Your executive abili ty, habits of industry, zealous and con scientious performance of duty would make you an admirable commissioner. I can state this after years of daily in tercourse with you as an officer of the Georgia Relief and Hospital Association, whose Vice-President and Secretary 1 was. You managed the large and impor tant trusts committed to your care as superintendent of the wayside home, with marked ability and fidelity, and to the satisfaction of our association. As commissioner, I think you would be the right .man in the right place. Your .dignified urbanity, courteous but firm bearing, would make you acceptable to teachers, and, I think your administra tive tnlAiif nnrt uniform nttimfirm in your duties, if elected, would make 3*011 a blessing to the children. If you were as well known in Abbeville as here, you would poll a heavy vote. I shall be glad, if alive, to hear of your success. Clod bless you Major. I am very re spectfully, your humble servant, WILUAM (4. HARD. PfiESBYTERIAN CHURCH. Communion service was observed in tlie Presbyterian Church of this village, on lust iSahbath, the pastor, Rev. J. R. Riley, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Samuel Donnelly and T. C. Ligon. The services, commencing on iTiday even ing, were of more than ordinary inter est, ami several accessions were made to the church. In this connection it affords us pleas ure to mention having enjoyed the priv ilege, on that occasion, of listening to several discourses delivered by an old and valued friend, and also a former army associate, Rev. T. Chevis Ligon, a native of Abbeville but now preaching in Newberry District. He is quite a young man. and was ordained only a lew weeks since. For one so young in the work of the ministry, he manifests the most gratifying evidences of ability, and his friends have reason to feel a just and pious pride in the promise he gives in his new and holy calling. We wish our friend well in his sacred warfare, and doubt not he will find it more congenial to his nature than the warfare we lett together in hostile squad ron and in the chilly bivouac. ?Laurens villc Herald.
