S621,0U0; second mortgage, ( S30G.500; non-mortgage, past due, i $18 500. < Upon the call of the Chair, Col. J. >S. Jothran explained the object of the meeting, giving at the same time a brief statement of the amount and condition of the debt of the road, and the difficulty attending its arrange incitf. lie wa? followed by Col C. U. Sim opton, of Charleston, on whose motion t^tc following resolution was adopted : J.\efolved, That a committee of five peraens be appointed by this meeting, who shall bo charged with the follow ing duty: ft'rat. To inquire into and report thejircsent indebtedness of the Green ville and Columbia Railroad Compa ny, classifying .the same as near as Iiossible, viz: Original first mortgage )ond-holders; bond-holders who ex- ' changed nrst mortgaged bonds for State guaranteed bonds; bond-holder, hokhng bonus and certificates of in- 1 ?lebtednc3S guaranteed by tho States j not included in the foregoing; holders non-moiigage bonds, holders of . necond moi'i^age bonds; estimating as i jiear as m:?y be practicable tho a nount 1 and numbers of bonds for which, liability is absolutely denied by the a company. f Second. M., was " then taken, to enable tbe committee j to dischcrgo the duties imposed upon v it. t Upon re-assembling, the committee, t through its-Chairman, submitted the following report: ,The committee of five appointed l>y tho meeting of bond-holders of 1U0 Greenville and Columbia Railroad Company, held on tho 19th instant, in the city of Columbia, beg leave re. ppccUuUy iQ report: That they called upon W. J. Alagrat Ii, Esq., President of the Company, and served upon him u true copy of l^ie resolutions. The rommittco have had a fricndlv and i'uIJ conference with .the resident, with this result: It ijB impossible, from the books of the company, or from the evidence in its possession, to trace with any absolute degreo of certainty the first mortgage bonds that wero surrendered ; also, which guaranteed bonds* were ac?epted. This may be ascertained b}' a long and laborious examination of the books of the Bank of tlie-State, to which, before the end of the .var, tiio surrender was marie, and the booics of the Slate Treasurer, to whom, after the war, parties who desired the cxehrnge were instructed to surrender their boucls; but this-in formation cnnnoi be hud from the company. The committee, therefore report the amount of outstanding J first-mortgage bonds, ^241 00.); the j amount of ^imrnnteed bonds and eer- ^ titieutes, $1,419,071; the amount of ^ non-mortgage bonds, $195,500; th>? amoniit of second m wtgago bonds is sued, and which have gone out <-f C possessiou of the company, is $1,495. 000. There is great reason to believe that very many of these were fraud- k ulently ooiaineu, ana tn.;t many were j issued without any authority. Of those issued, these were used in ex- 0 change and payment of debts the d amount of 897,000 ; on notes, as col laterals, ?175,500 ; bonds in the hands 0 of II. II. Kimpton, but which arc un-10 dcr control of the company, $26,500; bonds sold in New York, a few days t ago, t'io liability of which is denied, 'I $600,000; bonds which cannot be traced, and used without a iy author- fc ity, S596.000 ;on hands of the compa- > ny $5,000; tctal $1,500,000. With -regard to tho second branch I of the reso ution, the committee also c conferred with President Magrath. "Whilst he had been giving much at- t tention ana mougm, 10 iue seiuemeni of the outstanding indebtedness of ihe compan}', he did not fesl hints If able to enter into permanent negotiations j until he has had un opportunity of j consultation with his board of diree- , tors. This will af ford full opportunity of testing the yalidity of tho second mortgage bonds , wuicn aro now uui. uihii mis is done, no ecrtain basis of settlement can hardly fee reached.
