The Future Course of tlie Democrats?

Montgomery Blair has written a
letter to a prominent Democrat with
regard to the futuro oourso of the
party, in which he says:
"We will have to take Greeley or
Grant; and -wo will take Greeley, re
luctantly of course,"but not the less
icrt&ihly. And ho will be the more

erats do not wish to embrace at first.
As for their running a .candidate of
their own, that would be both disas
trous and disgraceful. They all gave
in their adhesion to the Cincinnati
Convention, and the most obstrepe
rous of Greeley's opponents had their
candidates before that Convention.?
Mr. Voorheesr for example, was loud
ia his advocacy of Judge Davis; and
the World was earnest in pressing.
Adams. .Now there certainly can be
no greatorijleparturo from? printiple
ia supporting Greeley than -there
would be in supporting Davis or
' Adams,"or any other Radical. TBei'e
can bo, in fact, no motive assigned for
the support pf one of-these men and
the refusal to s.ipport cither of the
others, but more personal preference.
This is not statesmanship ; it is mere
caprice, if not something worse
which men can indulge in without the
loss of public confidence. For my
own Dart, I <ro for the movement in-;
itiated at Cincinnati to arrest the I
l further progress of .Radicalism. It is
the only practical waj of arresting.?
As for running a straight Democratic ,
ticket between Greeley and Grant,
jjiat is a dodge that will not be al- |
lowed to succeed.. That Qftn be done (
only in the small field of local poli- ,
tics? where tho contest between the j
real aspirants is personal, and lias be
come embittered. But the contest
between the* ^Republican and Demo- 1
cratic parties has always been a sec- (
tionul contest, ono party representing <
the North and the other the South; v
and whenever the contest returns to i
that character, the Republican sue- t
cess is assured by the census. Itisjt
only by dividing the numerous North j i
and" allying itself with the more lib
eral division,, that the Democracy rep
resenting the South can hope for the
recovery of the right of self-goverfi
ment for its . section. The moment
that the Democracy shall set up for
itsolf, {he North will close its ranks
again; and the.only effect would be
to sacrifice the ieaders in the Liberal
party who had attempted to help ue.
-'This would disgrace us, and so help
to defeat uy, not only now but here
after."
