Henry Berry Lowry, the notori
ous outlaw and his confederates
have been holding a carnival here
for two days, sleeping at a store
near the railroad statiou. When
the down train lor w uniingiun ai
rived here to-day they had a barre
of cider rolled out of the store, ant
were treating a large crowd. " They
were particularly active in inviting
Sthe passengers out of the cars to
ink, iamilliarly tapping several of
them on the ehoulders and shaking
their hands. WhenLowry was tokl
that he had better keep a good look
out, or some one would kill him or
some of the gang for the rewards
offered by the State, he replied that
"any one who might kill him or
any of the gang could never prove
that ho had done the killing; all
they asked was to be let alone, and
they would leave everybody else
alone; if they wanted provisions
they would go where they could be
obtained; if they had money they

would demand them and take
them.'* They were, he said, deter
mined to kill oue man, who was
travelling backwards and forwards
on the train. They had warned
him several times not to come up
here, "and," continued he, "we
would have killed him yesterday
right in the car, if it had not been
for the number of ladies who were
in it." While he was saying this
the individual whom they had
doomed was at that very moment
crouched under a seat in the rear
car. * He lias incurred the terrible
anger of the out-Jaws from the fact
that he volunteed last winter as the
executioner of Oxendinc, one ol
their gang who was hung at Lum
berton. They told the conductor
that if he came up here again they
would murder him right on the
train* As tho train moved off they
saluted the conductor in millitary
style, and took a deliberate aim at
the train with their rifles, and con
tinued to fire until it was beyond
gurtshot distance, Tho audacity of

and is unparelled in the history of
any State. This man whom they
have threatened, is known in Wil
mington by the name of Frank
Maraden, and is a sailor-boarding
house runner.
The Diamond-Toothed-Saw Quarrying
One of the moat noteworthy won
ders ot this prolific age of invention
is a diamond-toothed-saw quarrying
machine, recently perfected by Ver
mont stone-workers, that bears the
same relation to the wealth of the
quary that the saw mill does to the
products of the forest. The main
features are simple, and consist of
a straight saw armed with diamond
points moving back and forth
through the stone with drills work
ing vertically to free the end of the
kerf. The diamonds employed are
of the black variety, on a half inch

inches, per hour, according to the
hardness of the material operated
upon?the machinc having been
tested on every grade, from the
toughest flint to the easily worked
marble, leaving at one operation a
smoother face on the harder stones
than can be produced otherwise by
days of labor. The economy of the
machine is shown to be great by
the fact that after the first invasion
of a quarry by its irresistible teeth
(whivh, in this primal operation, of
course smooth but one face of the
rock,) at all subseqent removes to
the centre of the mine two faces of
the stone are developed by each
sinking of the saw. Besides, the
great waste occasioned by the old
method of drilling and blasting into
valuable quarries is entirely over
come, not a foot of the material be
ing lost if survej-s are carefully
made. The saw on exhibition can

through a kerf of eleven feet to a

ted to answer the varied demands
of quarrymen. The instrument is
very compact, and one of the power
displayed can be operated by two

the fuel consumed, will amount to
less than ten dollars a day, effecting
an estimated saving cf labor of fifty
men and reducing the cost of solid
building material one-naif.
