But even before the burning of the i Hotel, the terrible tornado of sparks from ( Knox's blazing block had set on lire the' old inflammable roof of the Alston House, occupied by the Misses Cater, i and seemed to threaten its speedy ruin.'. But by early successful efforts on the) part of Mr. Edwin Cater and others, the' ! blazing shingles were torn off, and that building and the "Western portion of the town were saved, 'file sparks ignited a tree in the lot of Dr. Lyon, and for a time created great alarm. The inmates j of the Alston House all removed their e flee ts,-and so did those generally of the adjacent hoyses, whilst nearly all in the upper part of the town had theirs packed ready for removal. The carriage shop of Messrs. Seal, Sign and Robertson, on Washington Street, , and near the burning block, was in imminent clanger, and was only saved by:, the most earnest and persistent efforts. All of its contents were removed, and then the liberal application of water and wet blankets did the work. Had this J been burned, Mrs. Hughoy's just below,; would have shared a similar fate and all the buildings in that part of the town. But whilst the flames were rushing Westward aided hy a favoring wind, | they j>rogrcssed more slowly but as I surely to the East, until having swept j the brick buildings occupied by Chris-; t'ran & Wilson and Ivaphan A Sklarz, and j the wooden tenement next Law llange, they canght the wooden cornices of the Court House, and slowly ignited the j rafters and shutters. Slowly the tin roof, rolled npon itself liko a parchment scroll, and rafters and sleepers and floor- < ing were all ablaze, and falling in, left' the massive walls' intact. - The wooden . tenement* next Law llange, threatened imminent peril to those ofllees, and only I the most active efforts 011 the part of Mr.' John Enright and others, whose namcBt are mentioned in a card published in another column', saved the building. By great but unorganized exertions the devouring element was arrested at, four points? the Alston House on tlw South, the Cater House on the West, the Carriage Factory of Sign, Senl & Robertson ontheXorth, and Law Itange on the East. Heroic exertions were made at the Alston House and Seal, Sign & Robertson's. We thank those vrho labored in the good cause at any of the points, but to those especially who worked so successfully to stop the flames at Law Range, we return our personal thanks. We do not wish to seem invidious, but we cannot refrain from mentioning Mr. John Knright, Mr. James Wright, William Pope, Dennis Harrison, James Patton, Lewis (Jolsby, Lewis Parker, and others. The misfortune we have suffered, nwl the greater we have escaped, admonishes us that we should have organization. Let us at least have an efficient "Hook and Ladder Company."
