Mr. Thurlow Weed. New York Correspondence Syracuse (2Te\v York Journal. T ind t'if< nloasure to-^av of a brief interview with Mr. Thin-low Weed. He has como back from Europe in much better health than ho was when ho went away, some months ago, anil is as full as ever of anecdoto and reminiscencc of old timos. llis memory is clear a? a young man's, and rich in experience of many phases of political life. Unlike most people of Lis age, he is not .inclined to look upon the times of Lis youth as better than the present-except in one particular? that thcro is more political corruption anong the people at large and among politicians, at the present day, than In the younger days of the republic. It was pleasant to hear liim speak of the days when ho and tho late James Ilarper wero fellow pressmen in a small printing shop in John street, and used to get through with their regular "stent" of work before dinner, so as to havo the remainder of tho day for "over-work," for which they received extra pay. ? ?:.1 L- i "ALflny a ume, ??iu uu, uu>v> through two-thirds of our task before breakfast." Mr. Weed has recently hoen placed on the pension roll, for military services performed in the war of 1S12. and says nothing for a long timo bas given him so much pleasure a? banding over the first quarter's pa-' merit to an "aged and povertystricken comrade who had served by his side. Mr. Weed told many stories to illustrate the advance made in household comforts since the daj-s when tho use of ice, now an'indispensable article in every family, was wholly unknown ; when house furnaces were still nninvented; gas was not so much as droamed of, and tho markets, except in tho larger cities, were small and illsupplied. "Why, sir," said he, "I remember once hunting all over Albany for tomatoes- Most of tho market men had never heard of them. At lust 1 t'onnd one wno naa seen mciu in Now York, but didn't belicvo they could be procured anywhere out oi' the city. I asked him to send to New York for them, and he did so; but there was only one man besides m}-self who bonght them when they were obtained. Most peoplo looked at them with positive aversion, and many believed them to be poisonous. At that time Spanish mackerel, now esteemed ono of our most delicious kinds of fish, wcro very plentifu'; but the fishermen wouldn't encumber their boats with them. They called them 'horse mackerel,' and ahva}*^ threw them back into the water, as unfit for eating." Afr. Weed's mcmor}r of political events is wonderful, and his forthcoming book will be rich in reminiscences of the man who shaped the character and destinies of parties up to the departure of the old whig organization. ?? > ? Early Marriages.?Opinions vary much in reference to the subject cr early marriages. Some contend that tho young should not take upon themselves the responsibilities of wedded life because their judgments are not sufficiently mature to understand and ? nf?J>rtrcrv?t'cr-t4*-o of tlu>*o i?csponsibilities. Others contend that age blunts the finor sensibilities, and causes the individual to bccomo set. in his or her ways, and that it is difficult for such persons to harmonize, each one disliking to relinquish or modify habits which have become fixod and somewhat like n second nature. Tho truth is, the freshness of youth ought to be preserved to a much later period ot life than it is, and then this last objection would lose much of its power; additional age and the experience and ripening of judgment and roason which it brings, would bo bettor to qualify thoso of both sexes to enter into this solemnn arrangement with a surer prospect of happiness than is now the case. The unchecked imagination of youth and early manhood and womanhood pictures the future all too bright and cloudless for the reality, as it ever has been and over will bo found in this world; and tho result is too often a disappointment so deep as to render life unpleasant and to sour tho disposition On the other hand, the sot way of old bachelors and maids is quite an offset to their ago and wisdom. If the wisdom of tho old could joined t'- the freshness of the heart of tiio vour.g, the result would by fcr-i'pTncss in nearly every caso wedded lite. This could be dpoe, but jiot well, under the present state of societv. ? < - Pretty Women.?There is a chilly, disagreeable kind of article called common sense, which is of .all things most repulsive and antipathetical to ail petted creatures whose life has consisted in flattery. It is the kind or talk wine a sisters arc very apt to hoar from brothers, and daughters from fathers and mothers, when fathers and mothers do their duty by them; which set the world before i hem a-? it is, and not as it is painted hy flatterers. Those women who prefer the s -cicty of gowtlvimcn, and who have the faculty of bewitching their senses. n-'vor arc in the way of hearing forn this cold matters f fact region ; for them it really does not exist. Every phrase'that moets their car is polished and softenod, guarded and dolicrtcly turned, till thero is not a particle of homely, .truth left in it. They pass their time in a world of' illusions-they demand these illusions of all who approach them, as tho sole condition of penco and favor. All gentlemen, by a sort of instinct, recognize tho woman who lives by flattery, and give her her portion of meat in due season ; and thus some poor I vomen arc hopelesely buried as suicides used to be in Scotland, under a mountain or' rubbish, to wnich each pn"scr-by addsone ?Tor.e. It is only hv sop.ie extraordinary power of circ'Mnstancos that a man can be found to invade the sovereignty of a pretty woman with any disagreeable tidings; or, as Junius says, ' to instruct the throne in the language of truth." O O The ccrcmony of tying the marriage knot is much simplified in the ilocsier State, as the following will show : <'VVhat is your name, sir ?'* '-Matty," ' What is your name, Miss?" "]PblIy." "Matty, do you love Folly?" ".No mistake " "Polly, do yon love Matty?" "Well, I reckon.'^ "Well, then, " 'I pronounce you man and wife All the days of your life.' " Squirrels are so groat a nuisanco in California that a bounty of ten cents per head is paid for their destruction. A single hunter has killed and trapped fen thousand jri ono season, for which ] he got ono thousand dollars, lie sent Mm clrins lO Paris, where they sold at fifteen cents cach, swelling his receipts to two thousand five hundred dollars for bis captures. Tho skfns aro said to be more valuable than thoso of tho rat or kid in the manufacture of gloves. A "jour" tailor named Jimmy Yolk, ninety-four \'earsold,isnow traversing ! Ohio as a professional "tramp.'1 lie j has been on the tvamp for seventyjfive years, and has visited every State i in the Union many times, walking on an average 3,000 miles every year. The murderer of tho Justice Normon of Calcutta was hanged, and his body then burned by low-caste men, the object of the second operation ueing to scatter ins asncs t>i? timi when Azrael, the Angel of Death, comes to summon sinners to judgment, he may not bo able to find him. A fearful scone was enacted recently at Jaucr, in Silesia. A young girl, who had murdered her child, was to be beheaded. When she was led out she fought desperately with the executioner, who was not able to kill her I until he had stunned her by a blow on -the head with tho handle of his axo. A guild of ladies is proposed to be formed in England under tho leader- i ship of Miss Harrison of Swanage' Doresharo, "to promote modesty of dress, to do away with extravagance, nnd substitute the neatness and sobri oty suitable to Christian women."
