ROBBERY OF THE COUNTY TREASURER'S
OFFICE.
As is known to moat of our readers,
the office of Mr. L. II. Russell, the
County Treasurer, was entered on
Thursday night of the past week, and
money and county checks to the
amount of $15,000 abstracted. Doth
the door of the office and the safe
were opened with falso keys, and
were found open on the following
morning. A package of money containing
some $13,000 was overlooked
by the burglar, and was not taken.
Mr. Russell, with the aid of Chief
Constable Hubbard, and other officers
of the law, is sparing no effort toi

THE STATE TAXATION.

The oppressiveness of the present!'
Stato tax is shown in tho following
?
extract from the speech of Col. ttichard
Lathers, delivered at tho late
meeting of tho Charleston Board of '
Trade:
"One illustration will serve to show
Iho measure of the taxation of the
present year. The State and county
tax is $12 on the S1000. Now the
planters and farmers of this State do
not oxpcct to realize, under the most
favorable circumstances, more than
seven per cent, upon the value of
their property, which, it must he remembered,
is assessed for taxation, in
every case, at its full market value.
It is clear, therefore, that the planter
who makes 870 in the year upon eve
ry S10U0 of properly, pays'out of I
that $70 the sum of $12. or one sixth
of the wholo ineomo, in StUtc and
county taxes. But the tuxes of two ;
years are made due and collectible ,
this year?so that it is fair to assume 1
that the double tax of this year will >
amount to at least one-third of the
whole income of even those planters
who make a net profit of seven per
cent, upon the capital value of their
property. This is the effect upon
thoso who arc ablo to employ ad their
taxable property at a lull profit. Is .
it not evident, then, that where only
a part of the taxable property of a
planter can be made a source of in-j
come, or where his property is wholly
unemployed, tho taxes of the present
vear are practical confiscation ?

State tax was only $1 014,091, and
when the planters were in a comparatively
prosperous condition, only
8487,109 of tho taxes could be paid.
How, then, can the people, with cotton
selling at the cost of production,
and without any accumulated capital
to fall * back upoiy> pay this yoar a
total State and county tax of more
thtfn $4,000,000 ? [Applause.]
