Mr. Editor: On the evening otSofc* r urday last, 11th instant, two young men of our neighborhood?iangdon F. Connor and John W. Moore?bad a renoen- T tre with Henry Nash, a somewhatpreminent negro, which unfortunately result- " ed in the death of Nash. As the attfcir may probably be used for political capital, and trumpeted abroad as another.. Ku Klux outrage, ire think. It right to state that, Judging from the evidence ad- / duced before the july of inquest over the - body of Nash, there was nothing politic f cal in the matter. It seems tbat the parties met by accident in the store of Dr. Hart, ana hehi their conversation in the back-room, ? where Mr. Moore had gone to make a? business settlement. Nash came Into" * the store when the settlement wasne&rly finished, asked to see Mr. Moore, and inw sisted upon going into the back-room where lie was. Air. Moore ana .Nash sat quietly before the fire. Presently Mr. Moore entered the room, and the three were leftby themselves. Fearing, for some reason, that a difficulty might ?? 3ur. Br. Hart, desired all three to leave bis store. Going out by vrfde door, they continued their conversation in . the-. rard. Suddenly the firing of pistols, tvas heard, and a running fight followed NTaah retreatingand the young menpur-. suing?all three firing?till Nash reach" id the store of Mr. Win. A. No loud words where spoken?no, >ne heard the quarrel?nor doee any >?e know who flred the first shot. . Our citizens deeply regret the occor encc of this difficulty, and deplor? ts unhappy result; and they earnestly lope that this may be the last, as it ia ;he first,. bloody death. in their peaceful. ' ,'illage. For, strauge though it may seem in these days* of supposed Ktt tiluxism aud terrorism, Henry Nash is :he first man. ftliite or ; blade. ;hat hua lost his life by violence in our village. if the matter had ended here, it. would have been far better for the quiet . A our neighborhood but we have mora to tell. On the following day, Sunday* great number* of negroes flocked into uur village and gathered around Nash's nouse, where the dead body lay. About 100 yards from this house stands the house <*' Col. B. Herndon, one of our most peace-loving and respected citizen* who has always been a warm friend to Nash, aud whom the negro consulted in every difficulty; the last man. therefore, likely to be suspected of being a party to the death of Nash. About ouet o'clock p. m., while Col. Herndon wi? sitting quietly with his family in his house, ke states two" negroes, June Wilson and Manning -McKellar, or Qaiy, ^ entered his yard, while' a number or other negroes followed to thegate. The two named, with drawn pistols, came to j U door, and Wilson entered his piazza, uemanding iiis surrender. Col. Herndon asked what authority they acted, and as it soon appeared that they had no wurmnt or authority of any hind, he seized his weapons and bloodshed was prevented only by Mrs. Herndon. plao? ing herself between the parties. Soon, however, some citizens passed toe self-made pickets and found oat what liad happened. As might be expec tea, me news or sucji su outrage fired the blood of all the. citizens: . and, arming themselves, they went Eo the scene of the disturbance. Ex-., age rated ram ore were soon flying through the country, and, in an ;hour or two, ft goodly company of armed white men had gathered.
