FAIR WEES IN COLUMBIA.
The last seems to have been a stirring
week in the State capital, and
large crowds assembled, to witness
the varied attractions of the State
Fair; 6omo to bear a part in the
meeting of the Survivors' Association;
others to discuss tho political future
of the State in tho conference of its
leading citizcns whilst the young and
pleasure-loving of both sexes found
the crowning enjoyment in tbo festivities
of the ball of the South Carolina
Chi b,
THE STAT* FAIR,
is said to have boen a very great success
both in tbe completeness of the
exhibition and the largoness of the
attendanco. Every department was
well represented. There was a fine
display of horses, cows, goats an<l
sheep; of field crops; of the varied
\ products of household economy and
-do nestic skill: rn the mechanical dajnrtment,
and in the fine arts. In
ihe list of successful competitors we
are glad to see the names of nuiny
/rom Abbeville; of many who bearing
off the prize at our own District
Ifair, were equally successful upon a
wider arena and with a moro active
competition. This is as it 6honld bo.
The District Fair should be auxiliary
to the State Fair, opening its lists and
it^arding its premiums to those who
liave proved victors upon a more cirtfuinscribed
field of competition.
to. attendance was porhaps larger
than on any previous occasion and the
city was crowded to overflowing. The
. w?ather was fiae, and thousands were
<iaily present upon the-Fair Grounds,
forming a most brilliant array of rop"

Slate.
The success of the Fair affords a
<heering augury of the industrial future
of the State. In contributing to
its prosperity, the Society promises to
fdtm one of its most efficient agencies.
T&is efficiency will be very much iu^rjeased
by the formation of an Auxiliary
Joint Stock Company, the featores
of which are set f<?rth in an article
in another column, to which we
especially call attention.
