691. According to the census of 1869 (
between five and six hundred white i

authority it is adjudged that less than j
one hundred colored men stayed awtiy

nearly solid for the Radical ticket. '
while the white people divided considerably,
many of them voting for
tho "independent" candidates. This (
scattering vote, therefore, will elect <
candidates who received
the unanimous support of the 1

in South Carolina. Governor
Scott says that tlie lloforincrs, whom I
he calls "rebels," had become excited
over the recent meetings in the State,
and that a large body of men, armed <
to the teeth, were marching on Laurensville.
Governor Scott says that
the object of the rebels was to attack
Laurensville, and ho added that they
were destroying the ballot boxes on 1
the way for the purpose of proventing
the making of proper election
returns. .
