n ' L-~The
South Caroling Railroad Company.
r
In our iBsuo of Wednesday wo published
tho proceedings of a Committee
of tho Sonato on tho matters of
tho freight charges of tho South Carolina
Rail Road, botween Camden and
i ir onnMu mi >
i?vj. jiiiuou pruueeuings wero
based upon a complaint made by a
merchant of tho former place. The
South Carolina Railroad Company
is the property of a largo number ol
our citizens, who are poor; many
have saved but liltlo clso from the
wrock of war. It is important to
thom that tho value of their property
should not bo unfavorably affected by
misrepresentations, not correct in point {
of fact, or of facts greatly exaggerated
and distorted to gratify personal ^feelings,
to promote selfish ends. We know
those who have been entriistftil wil.h
the management of thia property.
We know, also, -what labors aud difficulties
they have had to encounter
in providin g for the public a highway
and accommodations not inferior to
thoso enjoyed in any section of the
Southern country. We know further
that it is claimed and wo believe,
justly that their rates of freight and
passage aro lo-du}* lotcer than any in
the State or near it. Still we hear the
clamor kept up, and its continuance
forces us to conclude that there is
something more in it than appears on
the 6urfacc. To do justice, therefore,
to all parties, we sought out informatiou
from thoso whom we regarded
authorized and able to furnish it, and
ascertain the facts of this case to be
simply these: That tho parties wlio
complain in this case have never approached
tho Directors of tho Company
with any statement of their
grievances; that tho South Carolina
Kailroad Company has no such charges
per 100 pounds upon any of its
freight tariffs as are stated in the reports
; that its charges for freight
from Camden to Kingsvillo are i>recisely
the same as they aro for similar |
distances from Charleston, from Columbia,
or from Augusta.
Now we confess with theso statements
before us, we aro at a loss to
comprehend tho necessity cf the pror?nn/li
nr* i ? - -?? p
wwMtn^ iv vYuiuu wu uru rcierring
The Rail Road Committee has clcarly not 1
sent for j)ersons and 2>apers.
But wo still hear more. It will bo
borno in mind, that the burden of|'
the complaint is, that the South Carolina
Rail Koad does not work thirty- '
eight miles of its lino in connection
with the Wilmington and Manchester, <
and Wilmington and Weldon Rail
Road, and tho rail roads leading *
through Wilmington to Baltimore,
which is a competing line, so as to *
iestroy tho trade of its own line to 1
Charleston, the interests of the City
5f Charleston and of tho State, and *
tho steamships which have cost so
:nueh effort, and money to establish,
for tho very purpose of giving Cxtmden
ind all other inland cities a. route North
jver their own line and through thoir
Jwn city. Now what aro theBO very c
jompeting rail roads doing, for whom
this ruinouB policy is invoked?pursuing
tho very identical practice which
is complained of, though in a greatly I
exaggerated form, of the South Caroli- ^
na Company. "We understand that c
freight on the Wilmington and Man- 1
sliester Rail Road, (say a bale of cot- *
ton.) is as much as from Sumter to
Kingsville, twenty-seven miles, or c
Mars Bluff to Florence, six miles, as *
it is from these places respectively to
Wilmington, over one hundred miles. ^
Ts this true ? The same is the case *
on the Charlotte Road, and we presume
on every rail road in existence, ?
and the reason is obvious. It is 1
Psv..~A - ?- ? -
luuiiu in iuu service ana necessity of
every company to protect s>nd pro- ^
mote its own interests, and that inter* ^
est is of course in the direction of
freight movements along the entire "
li ?o of its rail road, and to and through I
an important terminal or initial
point. f
Nor are the rail roads mentioned in 4
the complaint exhibiting any unusual
liberality in the adoption of what .
appears to bo a low tariff of charges, (
through, as compared with the South
Carolina Bail Road's local tariff;
their effort is to divert a business
which does not belong" to fiem, and to do
so, temporarily establish a very low \
rate of froight, for that which

Road, and tlio City of Charleston.
What arc their local charges? Place
thou in comparison with similar charges
on the South Carolina Rail Road
before forming a too hasty conclusion.
But are we expected to manage our
institution in the interest of competing
linos of rail roads, and distant
communities ? Have the stockholders
of the South Carolina Rail Road
expended vast sums of money to construct
a system of internal improvement,
at once to develop the wealth
oi tne interior ana establish an inflaentiaj
seaport fpr themselves, and
havo their efforts tarn to nought, and
their work a corse, not ft blessing ?
