the Honorable Lomucl Boozer, Judgoi
of tho Fifth Circuit of tho Court of J *
Common Fleas and General Sossions,
yrbrlo i-hrjWing court in Camden. A 1
goMyfcitij^ei, nn intelligent lawyer, a '
? fca^ablc ind ibipurtial jadgo, the great J
destroyer, in striking him down, has 1
subjected the whole State to a mourn- '
fyl cnlopiity, covering all the people 1
"wrth'gloom. Although a Republican 1
in politics, wo thank Olod that, in the i
sterling vigor of his moral conslilu-j|
tii n, ho was afclo/tc^lift hte mind far] ,

in the administration of the great of- ,

spotted even unto death. What a
solaco this consciousncs must have 1
fcfe# t?*jhfjr?j' *5 all mortal Jiopcs and 1
wiwratiftna 'wore passing forever ^
away! Judgo Boozer's mind was 1
not brilliant, but his judgement was *
Bound; and, altkoug h his learnin.r ?
may not have been so varied and at- |
tractive as that of some others of the 1
legal profession, yet upon the Bench t
ho was found to be fully equal to the
high tasks of his position, and, after t
argument, capable of cloar discrimi- c
nation and correct decision. The ^
qualities, too, of patience, courtcsy L
and mcrcv cminentl*- adorned him nsl
ar'Jted^jof whilst the social elements of 1
'^lns character enlivened his com pan- a
ions and made him acccptablc on all 0
Revisions. ft must indeed be very c
:jjjriUeftil to the feelings of his friends
of the Columbia Bar. now that the
grave has intervened between him i
and them, to remember how thor- ti
ougbly he had won their kindest con- ft
sideration and how suitably they ex..
pr^sCBcd it to him at tho close of a la- ^
ooribus extra term of his Court, in t<
August last. Judge Boozer was a c
native South Carolinian, having been
born in Lexington District, in 1808,
as we aro informed ; was educated at I :
the South Carolina College, in the!
time of tho Presidency of the late | ?
venerable Dr. Cooper; entered upon i
the.praetice of law, in the villago of j1
,?- Lexington, about the year 1832; and *
for several terms represented the people
of Lexington in the General As- ^
sefobly, first as a member of the
' House of Representatives, and then ; *1
in the Senate of tho State. If wo hi
may refer, with propriety, at all, toj
his recent political relations, we may j ft
record the fact that ho was elected, j si
with great unanimity, by the Ilepub-jd!
lican party, in 1808, to the oflico of
Lieutenant-Governor, aud, under the in
constitution, became, ex officio, Prcsi- oi
dcut of the Senate, ovdr which body
lie presided with entire acceptability C
iH*d. success. Thv hearts of his sur- 11
viving family and friends, and of a
stricken people, are weighed down ?
with sorrow, but are comforted iu le
' the reflection that above the gloom of *=
the grave shines the light of a pure
and honest life. ^

The same phenomena attended the
storm at Nashville, St. Louis, Louis*viiie

unprecedented, extending as far East C

The tide of emigration from the

The fertile and unoccupied
