~l. JJ1 Presentment of the Gran <Jury.. SOUHI CAROLINA, - Abuevillb Coujrar. In the Court of Sessions, Janwn Tcrpi, 1870. / "Wo, tJio Grand Jury. of Abb< ville County, beg leave to make th following presentment: "Wo find?: 011 examination, tli-' the cells in the Jail arc all in goo ^rder. The Locks however are i bad repair and should be improi cd. In cases of lire, the danger to ir mates is very groat, hence wo su^ gest the addition of a porch to tb 1 1- J P it . n ? ? uucK uuor 01 inc nrst 6tory, and stairway to the second story; als that a pavement of brick bo lai from the front gate to the froi door, and from the Tjack door t the kitchen, to obviate the mui and inconvenience of ingress an egress to the Jail building. The well at the Jail is also i bad condition and should be r( paired. The passage way to ii also needs improvement. We find the Court House in 01 dcr, only needing a few fastening to the windows, a slight amount c plastering to be done, but suggca that better accommodation, such a chairs. be furnished the Grand an< Petit Juries. The Clerk's Office needs an addi tional casement for the preserva tion of books and documents. Iu the Judge of Probate's Office one table, fire dogs and tongs an needed, also a book case necessary for papers, &c. We recommend that the opening or cross passage on tlj^ South Eas side of the Court House be enclos cd as an Office for the County Com inissioncrs, Bimilar to the othci offices. "We recommeud that the trees ii the public square he enclosed ii wooden boxes, and curbed witl rock for their preservation. We present the disorder upor tire side ivalks aud public street! of Abbeville on Salcsday, anc other public days, as a nuisance, and suggest that suit be instituted against the Town Council of Abbeville, if this be not immediately abated, and the good order and peace of society be preserved. Reports have been returned to us tliat tbe Goads in many cases Lave not been worked, particularly in the North Western part of the! Ceunty; lieuce we report this deficiency on the part of the Road Commissioners, and urge an immediate repair of all the Roads, Bridges and Ferries. "We fiud the Inmates of tliePoor IIouso well fed and clad, and no objection is mode to the manage incut of tbe present incumbent Mr. Kennedy. "We call tlic attention of liia Ilonor to tbe number of petit cases presented to us, from Magistrate's "Warrants, issued on trivial" "testimony, incurring expense to the State,-and delay to more important matters of State and of persons. ,We return our appreciation ol tbe courtesy extended to us by bit Ilonor Judge Vernon and Solicitoi McQdwan.
