A Scheme for Organizing tlio Abbeville I,
Agricultural Society. j 1
|I
Cokesbury, Dec. 1809. |<
Dear Lee: I promised last week:i
to propose in today's issue a scheme!
by which tho Abbeville Agricultural
Society can be placed upon a substantia
and successful monied basis. In
venturing upon such a proposition I
foel, that I advance no idea that may
not be adopted by any planter with- 2
out detriment to his agricultural in- j
terests, and 1* exclude all possible op-j
portunity for speculation. A planter,! j_
(and by this word I mean any man j
wholly devoted to the agricultural
development and success of his in- j0

bonds, stock, or cash capital, but spec-['2
ulation upon agricultural investments j v
involves the homestead, the iamilv.!
and
henco infringes upon sacred 1
right*. ..
Disabused then of any possible con- C
nection with speculation, 1113* idea i*j^
simply Uiis: That the planters of -\b ! *
heville District, and all other citizens I
of cvory and all professions, unite
and establish by contributions of inon-;

Association for the mutual benefit of
the whole District. Just as if we
wore about building a It ail Road from
Abbeville C. II. to Savannah river, j
let books of subscription bo opened in ; '
all parts of the District. Stock will j 'J
be valued at ten (810) dollars per c
share, aud every man who is a life l,
member of the existing society will
bo entitled to one share. All persons,
white or black, guardians and wards,
widows and orphans, fathers and'sons, 1
mothers aud daughters, and especiallyold
bachelors, will be invited and urg*d
to buy our stoek. This stock will
foj JxeUangod for cash, or notes, orbji J 5
tercd for any possible kind of production
at the market value and where exchanged
for notes such notes will bear
tipon their faco an interest of ten per

can easily bo loaned at an interest of! 1
10 per cent.
I farther propose, that the holder';
of* two shares bo allowed to exhibit
annually what lie or she pleases. The
holder of one share (male or female)
pays in addition one dollar to be entitled
to the same privilege! No single
mcmbor to bo allowed to take
more than ton "shares, and an investment
of ten shares shall entitle the
contributor's family to all tho privileges
of tho Society. Interest upon

put in suit for collection.
All notes given during 1870 will be
cxpeeted to pay one dollar on every
ton by tho 1st September of tbc same
your.
This is the' schema, now for its
practical workings. There aro two
thousadrl'Wtite voters in Abbeville
District; there are threo thousand
colored voters. Suppose two thousand
of the whites, including widows,
minors, and Orphans, take each one
share,-and five hundred of the colored
take each one share, wo will have nn
Agricultural Stockholders Company

twenty-nyo thousand dollars invested
at ton ?e*.:cent., and of course giving
us annnally an: interest of twenty-fivn
