street left Saturday morning for a
two weeks' vacation to Summerton,"

Mr. J. J. Dillard of 3ishopville was
in the city this week on business
Mrs. Addie B. McWhirter of Spartan
burg spent last-week in the city, visit
ing her friend, Mrs. Alberta ' Altee

quite a plessant stay.
Rev. W. ?L Gladden of Birmingham,
Ala., visited in the city a few days
Rev. Gladden lived in the city several
years ago w}ien he made many lasting
friends. Sihce pastoring in Alabama
he has made it a rule to visit the city
every year ^hen on his* vacation.
Mrs. Man ha Jones left the city
Wednesday for Knoxville, Tenn., for^
a two week; j' visit. While there she
will be the Iguest of her brother and
sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Julius Wil
liams.
Mr. Geo./ Johnson, of Charleston,
Mrs. Adell Pattyfote of Denmark, and
Mrs. Rosa Murray of Beaufort are in
the city on a visit to their parents,
Rev. Dr. and Mrs. M. G. Johnson, on
Hampton avenue.
Mrs. Nancy Johnson of Orangeburg
spent a few days in the city recently
with her nei ?e, Mrs. Hattie Green. She
left on the 16th for Bennettsville,
where she is visiting her daughter,
Mrs. Dr. Frankie Reese.

Preparations for the great pageant
to be held in Columbia, S. C., on Labor
Day by the ?colored citizens are still
in progress.
Reports from the various local com
mittees and people from the neighbor
ing towns are to the effect that this
affair certainly will be the greatest
that has been pulled off in this part
of tfee country by our people.
At our first meeting to report pro
gress it was indeed encouraging to
note the interest and enthusiasm dis
played by the various committees.
Representatives from Orangeburg
and- St. Matthews were present and
pledged loyal support. t x
Among the unusual attractions
which will feature this occasion will
be the building of the "Tower of
Light."
The symposium with its many able
speakers promises also to be well
worth the time and attention of the
lovers of knowledge.
