AUGUSTA NEWS.

Dr. Charlejj T. Walker, the most
noted Negro j preacher in the United
States, died ^t his home in this city
at 2 o'clock ! Friday morning, after a
lingering illness. He was born near
Hephaiban, pa., 14 miles from Au
gusta, on February 5, 1858. In Sep
tember, 1876? after two years as a stu
dent of the ?Augusta Institute, now
Morehouse jcollege, Atlanta, he was
licensed to pjreach, being only 18 years
old at that jtime. In 1877 he was or
dained to thie sacred office of the gos
pel ministry! At the time of his death
he had beenj preaching nearly 44 years
and duringj that time he had only
missed six Sundays from preaching
and that w^s on account of sickness.
Dr. Walker jwas the most noble Negro
preacher in! the United States and he
had powerful influence with both
races in Georgia and the entire South.
He pastoredj Mt. Olivet Baptist church,
New York, ind Central Baptist church.

Tabernacle I church originated. This
church has [2,000 members and 15 dea
cons and is] one of the largest colored

churches inj the country. During the
tourist season when many wealthy
Northern piersons visit Augusta, they
never forgejt to hear him before they
leave. Ex-President Taft, John D.
Rockefeller; Nathan Strauss, Foster
Peabody, mjade this church their spe
cial place oj? worship while in the city.
Mr. Rockefeller gave him flOO per
month as l<pg as he lived. The white I
daily paperis had his picture on their f
front page jantl one man who had not
been in Augusta long asked Mr. Ham
ilton, the editor, why he had a Negro's j
picture on jhis front page and he re
plied that liis paper was not honoring
Dr. Walkerj but it was an honor to the i
paper to pjrint the likeness and life j
of such a peat man. Eulogistic ser
vices were j held on Thursday at Tub j
ernacle church and the leading men
from different sections of the country
were present. A memorial service will
be held ini September and Dr. E. R.
Carter willj preach his funeral sermon.
He and Dr.j Carter made an agreement
during his jlifetime that when one died
the other ione would preach his fu
neral. Dr.) Carter is in Europe. His
home is inj Atlanta. The prophet had
several interviews with this great man
and he always spoke in high terms of
the ministers of our dear State. He
told me that he married Dr. Carroll

and that hfe was a great man. He knew
Dr. E. M. jBrawley, Drs. Kemp, Klugh,
Callahan jmd Dr. M. W. Gilbert suc
ceeded hijn as pastor of Mt. Olivet,
New York?
Dr. Wajker organized the first col
ored Y. M?. C. A. in America, in New
York city^ and he organized the first
one in thje South right here in Au
gusta. It! was the Y. M. C. A. that
gave me Jthat rgeat welcome on my
return to ?Augusta after I was able to
tell exactly the time that the world
war woulji end. Dr. Silas Floyd was
Dr. Walkejr's assistant and is now act
ing pastoij of the church. He acted as
master oj ceremonies at my service
of welcome.
When I preached for Dr. Earle at
Spartanbijirg I was touched by him
making tjie announcement at the close
of the service that he wanted all his
members Ito pray for Dr. Walker and
Dr. KemJ). He said that he would
ask for al collection for Dr. Kemp the
next Suijday. I think that was so
nice in jiim to remember those who
had wori[ themselves out fighting sin.
There lare some pastors that don't
care for kny one but themselves. Dr.
Walker hjad the highest esteem for Dr.
Earle because this wonderful young
leader h^d erected a fine church like
his. He jwas an A. F. M. Mason, Odd
Fellow aid K. of P.
There Jis a young preacher by the
name off Rev. Lindsay who runs a
truck foil a store. He has pastored a
church f]or 18 months and he has
added 34?0 members to his church,
which islmore than any other two pas-j
tors hav?j done. He is a wonder. God j
works mjysteriously. j
