The most beautiful scene that has
been witnessed in the Piedmont sec
tion of South jCarolina this year was
the laying of the cornerstone of New
Zion Baptist jchurch by the Masons
and the masterly sermon preached by
Dr. J. S. Earje at Inman, S. C? on
June 12th.
Rev. J. C. ! Coin, District Deputy
Grand Master,- was the master of cere
monies. Representative lodges with
the officers from Jmesvilie, Union,
Gaffney, Cow^ens, Greenville, Greer,
Spartanburg, | Hendersonville, N. CM
and Tryon, Nj C. Every Mason gave
$1.00. Rev. jW. M. Lipscomb is the
progressive pastor of this church. He
is having a tyrick structure erected;
also he is pasjtoring three other good
churches. j
Dr. Earle w^s at his best, and those
who have known him since he has
been pastorin^ in Spartanburg, says
that he preacjhed the best sermon of
his life. It wjas certainly a great ser
mon. His subject was, "Obedience to
God." He hasj made a fine record and
is a safe leader. He is nationally
known and is a worthy successor to
our late lamented Dr. Durham. From
the mountains to the sea I can hear
the pastors sneaking in high terms of
him.
Mt. Moriahj is the most beautiful
church in the| Piedmont section, and
one of the fijnest in the Srate. He
also pastors jo rural churches.

prove costly ifor any one to attempt
to build up aj white Republican party
in the Southern States?and Demo
cratic converts can not be secured for
any other kinjd of a Republican party,
it is admitted?is about to be demon
strated in Washington.
A subcommittee of the judiciary
xo?ttee of the Senate, June 21, will
conduct public. hearings of charges
preferred by North Carolina Negroes
against Frank A. Linney, nominated
by the president to be district attor
ney for the festem district of North
Carolina.
The charg?s against Linney 'are
based on thej alleged fact that during
the campaignj last fall in North Caro
lina he stoodj for white supremacy in
politics. It i^ said that a letter, bear
ing his signature, in which he said
that "in thej future the Republican
party's policy! will be to let the Negro
stay out of politics," will be submit
ted. I
During th? campaign the Demo
crats charged that the Republicans in
North Carolina were attempting to
win by Negjro votes. Linney made
vigorous denjial and expressed the
hope, it is sjaid, that a white man's
Republican pjarty might br created.
It is believed that as an example,
Linney's nomination will be turned
down by the1 committee. The Negro
vote has bedome a power in doubtful
