England in the Midst of a
Tempest.
The uprising of (he women of
lOugland and their insistent de
mand to he given the ballot will ?
provoke more serious trouble in
England than has already
occurred. The English parlia
ment appears to lack the eap'aeilv
tn deal proprlv with this ques
tion. The suffragettes are resort
ing lo methods that must bring
the blush of shanie lo every decent
civilized woman. Their treat
ment of their king and queen is
outrageous. Their indecent con
duct will result in a loss of sympa
thy in America for their cause and
the cause of female sn lira ge
everywhere.
Another serious condition thal
confronts the entire United King
dom is the matter of home rule
for ireland. Kui few people tip
pear to understand the situation.
AYere it not for the seriousness of
the situation it would be amusing
to read sonic of the discussions
through thi' press on this question.
For the in formal ion of some of
our readers we wish to state thc
following facts :

Ireland is an island-one of the
British Isles-forming a part of

Britain and Ireland, lt is divided
into four provinces-Ulster.
Leinster, Munster and Connaught.
In area it is bul a little larger
than South Carolina, hut has
aboul three limes South Caro
lina's population. The Irish are
distinctively and emphatically
Roman Catholics. The English
and Scotch are mainly Protest
ants. The attempt (d' the Eng
lish government near the close of
the Kith century lo introduce thc
Reformed faith and English in
stitutions niel with stubborn and
determined opposition on the pari
of I he Irish and stirred up great
dissension in Ireland. A revolt
on the part of the Irish chief,
particularly those in Munster and
Ulster, led to (he confiscation of
their lands, the King and parlia
ment giving much of the lands to
English settlers in Munster, and
Scotch and English settlers in
Ulster. After passing through
various vicissitudes. Ireland, on
Jan. 1, 1801. was united willi
Great Britain as an integral part
of it and its policies of state have
been dominated by English influ
ence. The sympathies of the Pope
of Rome and the entire Roman
Catholic church have been with
the Irish and against England.
The situation at this t ime appears
to be severely acute. The l lster
ites appear to In? the most intelli
gent, courageous and influential
people in Ireland.
The passage by parliament of
the bil! as originally framed, is
jin impossibility, lt would place

same sit mit ion occupied by thc
white people of South Carolina
from I8f>9 lo 1K70. and would re
sult in a bloody revolution, the
end of which un one can predict.
Many of the leading statesmen
and clergymen, and some of the
most influential people of all
classes in England, sympathize
openly with the Ulslerites. Some

Roberts, will resign their com

see thal a compromise measure
has been passed excluding l ister

Congressman Lever has been
putting in some good work at
Washington, quite in contrast to
Congressman Ragsdale, who ap
pears to be no bigger than a pea
nut politician. The Smith-Lever
Hill has been accepted by the
House, and. on signature of Presi
dent Wilson, became a law. Sen
ator Hoke Smith took opportuni
ty to manifest bis Negro-hating
spirit in the discussion, and suc
ceeded in having the Hill as pass
ed s?? formed as to prevent thc
Negro from having a just and
proper recognition in this meas
ure. Hut let us wait and bide (Mir
lime. Right will eventually win.

it may. The fact is, Benedict'
College has a system of Theolog
ical Training that every minister
of the gospel in South Carolina
in particular might rightly feel
glad over. For the College
trained man, a B. D. course is
provided; for the L. I. graduate,
a B. Th. course is provided; for*
those who have not been so for
tunate as to get such training
that would make them eligible
to these degrees, a course known
as a "Ministerial Course" has
been provided. It is about this
latter provision I wish to saya
word or two.

"Ministerial Course" has been
reasonably attended, everything
considered, by the brethren here
and there over the State. With
out calling their names, suffice i
it to say, that young and old min
isters, experienced and inexperi,
enced pastors, and right through
the years of this course, pastors
even of great religious powers
and remarkably wide influences
have been students of this "Min
isterial Department." And it,i
can be truthfully said, if their
own unsolicited testimony and
their actual work (and I might
)e allowed to add) if their very
ooks and bearing, meant any
;hing at all, the benefit these
students derived from the train
ing herein given, cannot be told
by human tongue. The great
results thus obtained have not
only justified the sacrifices they
underwent to remain here two,
three, and four months at a ses
sion for about as many years,
but also demonstrated beyond
the slightest question the wisdom
of this "Ministerial Depart
ment."
In a word, this "Department"
is very much akin to our regular

points, it covers the reign of The
ology as this is commonly under
stood and deals largely in every
thing that pertains to the pastor
al functions and relations. And
without boasting, the goods are
so simply given, so earnestly put,
so completely handled that to
those who are "in the game",
this Ministerial Department is a
very modest term as compared
with what it actually is and is
doing to make for South Carolina
more efficient ministers of the
Gospel. This department, in
fact the whole system of Theo
logical work here, in Benedict
College ic more hopeful, more
promising for better things than
ever. The writer knows where
of he speaks. Let us therefore
have a larger and more represent
ative patronage of this Course
and thus prove ourselves more
worthy of this exceptional op
