The imports of the past week cxoced seven
millions dollars of which there was four millions
of sugar, tea and coffee. Tho excitement
in the Gold Room has been intense for
several days past. Four or five of the heaviest
stock speculators have lost fortunes in that
time bj throwing their money and influence
against the rise.
A London letter to a banking firm here savs
the specie arrivals are an immense thing for I
American credit. The amount sent from America
is everywhere admitted to have saved
general bankruptcy in England. The letters

Anticipating the adoption of the Constitutional
amendment passed by the Uuited States
Senate and just concurred in by the House,
Governor Curtin of Pennsylvania addressed a
Circular to the Governor's of the Northern
Btatoa, suggesting the propriety of union in
action and the calling together of the Legislatures
for the immediate ratification of the
amendment, and before the adjournment of
Congress.
The Star asserts thst the votes of the more
Conservative Union men were obtained for
Constitutional amendments by a pledge from
thoir Radical colleagues that no action shall
b? taken daring the present session upon the

on reconstruction. This virtually refers the
whole matter to the people.
There ?U considerable excitement on the
steps in front of the capitol to-day. Kosseau,
who had a rattan, approached Urinnoll, and
said he had waited several days for him to
apologise for the outrageous assault made on
him in debate. Grinnell said, 1 have no apolgy
to make. Kosseau, thereupon caned him,
Grinnell making no resistance whatever ?
When Kosseau had finished the flagellation,
Grinnell merely said, "it is all right," and the
parties separated.

by the 8peaker that Joint resolutions did not
have to be submitted to the President for his
signature. After some debate on the special
order, the bill for restoring the Southern States
to political privileges, the House adjourned.
The trial of paymaster Paulding was conoluded
