The lecturer described the assemblage of
the privy council, ami read her Mujosty's

love for, and devotion to the liritish Constitution.
Twenty-three years have elapse i
since that time, aud in no one instance has
she swerved iroiu it. fcihe was fortunate
iu her Ministers. The agreoobility, tnet,
good taste ami worldly knowledge of Lord
Melbourne were deservedly eulogised, lie
and the Luke of Wellington proved excellent
advisers to the young Queen. They
dined with her every day, aud, being old
gentlemen, would sometimes drop a.-l e|>
over their wine, when she would tickle
their noses. Very soon Lord Melbourne
thought it advisable that she shou d Lc
inai ried, and on his stating it iu diplomatic
language, she did not understand
him, aud replied, " Let ute have the Luke
of Wellington !" ITxplanations being offered,
she objected severely to her cou*ius

was reduced by one half. The young
couple started in life with u mutual income

It was not too ruueli; they brought up
their family on it without -ailing for a
separate allowance for any of them. Mr.
Sid oih described the coronation and enumerated

bled, telling an anecdote of Marshal Soult
and Lor a i I ill, old foes, who melon that
occasion. lie then depicted a day in the
Queen's life. She rote at half-past six in
ho summer, seven in winter, and always
walked ubroud, returning to morning prayers
and brcalOTt', at which she ate hearti
y, and subsequently spent half an hour
in tho nursery. She next received the
Master of tho Household and decided what
invitations should be accorded fur the day,
and then visited her aviary, menagerie,
aquarium or stables. She was passionately
fond of horses and u goo 1 rider. At eleven
she accorded audience to the Secretary
of.War, the Liomc and Foreign Secretaries;
at twelve she received general visitors,
lunched at one, when she drank Alsop's
pule ulo. At three she entered her carriage
or rode on horseback, cither visiting
or ou some errand of charity.
An anecdote was related of her kindness
and libciality towards Mrs.- Warner, the
actress. 'J'he Queen gave a medal to Florence
Nightiugale, Ueturuing from her
drive or ride, her Majesty dined in state,
Whitrh was rather a dreary affair, no conversation
being allowed, lint that over,

pevailed. lie was neither dell nor
stupid, hut a youth of the noblest disposition,
and splendidly educated. Juke his
mother, he appeared rickety and delicate
in youth ; it was feared that he might not
survive, ilo carried his head a little on
one side now. lies|>oke French, German,
Italian, and Spanish with fluency, la-sides
being a good Greek and Juitin scholar.
. He was weH acquainted with law and the !
fine arts, a good soldier, theoretically, and
n good horsciuun ; no wall or brook stopped
him when on horseback ; lie was what is
technically termed, a " bruising rider."
Tie danced enormously, like most of the
English youths of the day, and was always
guided by personal appearance in bis
choice of partners.
The lecturer terminated with an allusion
to the friendly relations between Great
Britain and the I'nited States, which he ,
thought the Prince's visit would still further
establish.
