Western Women.
"New York ladies are fearfully and wonderfully
made. They have a great many
unaccountable crotohets in their pretty
little heads. It's the height of tho mode
to curry ra fat, puffing poodle dog about in
their arms, or lead hiui by a gild d chain
But if a lady carries her baby herself, she
looses caste immediately."
Tho above remarks made by Mrs.
George Washington Wyllys, in Lfe lfhis
tmterf, woke up one of tho strong-minded
and atrong-armcd women oF tho West?
Mrs. Frances 1). (Jage?who writes to the

Western women go shopping, but they
take the beets and turnips, chickens,
choose, blackberries and raspberries, and
exchange them for blue check and 6togics,
that their stroughauded boys may not fear
the bito of rattlesnakes, or mad dogs in
August.
Trading done, they speed homeward and
refresh themselves by getting dinner, and
eat corn dodgers, or ham and eggs, without
a dream of indigestion. Their children
do not half die (guess you wouldn't
think so if you could look iusidc the home
at bcd-tiiue,) and their husbands don't
brake up un ess they have invested the last

species of the huuian.
We could find you western ladies that

the aid of gymnasiums. We can promise,
without any fear ofu. failure, to set evi ry

October?if only with the shakes.
But bless us, what's the use of talking?
New York Jaci -s arc no m ire like Western
women than a music box is like a sewing
machine, or a theatre liko a railroad, or an
opera like an ngiiculturul fair. "Thorn's
no account," said old Charlotte, as a half
dozen of the former flaunted by?"them's

from the top of their heads to the soles of
their feet, und 'twon't help'cm. The lady
never strikes in; it always works for the

A Beautiful Extract.?Beautiful is
old age, beautiful as the slow drooping mellow
Autumn of a rich, glorious Summer.
In tho old man, nature has fulfilled her
work; she loads him with fruits of a well
spent life; and sum unded by bis children,
she rocks him away softly to the grave; to
which he is followed by blessings. God
forbid that we should not call it beautiful.
There is another life, hard, rough, and
thorny, trodden with bleeding feet and
aching brow, a buttle which uo peace fol
lows this side of the grave; which the grave
gips to finish before tho victory is won;
ami strange that it should?this is the
highest life of a man. Look hack along
tho great names of history, there is none
whose life is other than this.? MV.sfmiatter
