Our immediate neighborhood has beoii sulTcring
(rum drought for sotno time, though gardens alone
arc really injured. Corn is small, but vigorous
nnJ fresh, with a good prospect of making n fair
crop. Within the week several showers have fallen
around us, but wo are still quite dry about the
village. The sky is overcast with dull leaden
clouds as wo write, and we hope to have n good

and wc are led to fear that national bios,

circumstances that may lend severity to slashing
criticism on all questions not in precise accordance

Wo arrived in time to secure n comfortable seat,
uod to witness tlie whole proceeding*. At ten
o'clock A. M. the crowd was enlivened with
some lino uud thrilling music by the Greenville
band, which, at thu head of u column of sedate and
venerable looking men, was seen marching toward
the chapelry. Among those thus distinguished,
besides the Faculty and Trustees, were numbered
some of our most distinguished citizen*. In the
line ooulJ be seen the towering form of our (Mipulnt
lix Governor, John II. Means; the venerable Dr
Pierce, of Ga.; the Lieutenant Governor of our State,
Hon. Gabriel Cannon; Mr. Williams, ono of the
merchant princes of Charleston; and Dr. Dogan,
one of tho niuxt allhieiit men of tho up-country.
On the stage, in front of tho whole nuJicncc, these
men were seated, thus presenting an imposing appearance.
At the hour np|M?iiitcd, half-past ten o'clock,
tho Graduatiug Class delivered addresses, excepting
Mr. Dawkins, who was excused on necouut ol
ill health. Tho first address, by Mr. Cofield, was
in tho Latin language, and though doubtless a good
piece of coni|Hjnilion, w is, in consequence of its laitinily,
iucoruprehensible to all but a favored few. It
seemed, however, to have the classical flow
and richness peculiar to that tongue. Mr. Cofield
is a gentleman of fine talents, and bore off the see
ond honor. On this point, why, lef us inquire, is
this custom if ? Latin address sr? rigidly observed
on such occasions? It is certainly not that the evidences
of scholarship are necessary to givo celebrity
an I reputation to our Colleges. The Faculty are
u sufficient guarantee of the thorough training and
development of those who take diplomas, without
such u distinctive feature, and therefore we think
it should be abandoned, or the whole address should
be translated. To deliver such an address niUd'. be
a ta^k, we apprehend, and therefore were pleased
with the smooth inanuor ol the speaker. Next
came Mr. Howie, one of our own citizens, llis
subject was Cicero. His theme war spirit stirring,
and suggestive of the richness of that eloquence for
which the Great Orator was distinguished. Handsomely
did the speaker pjrtray tho fo'bles of tliQ
character of this illustrious man, as well as llmsc
virtues and noble de Is which gave irnpcrishnhlo
glory to his name, and to his country a fame "rn re
durable than brass"?eternal as tho eternity of
lofty genius, of virtue, and patriotism. Tho model
of oratory thus selected is ono worthy of Imitation;
and in n county like ours, where the rostrum, tho
stage, and tonqiorary platforms aro common, and
innumerable opportunities for spocch making arc

lie taken, and none can tell to what perfection the
graduate may nltain in this most potent art. Next

To extinct from a subject bo comprehensive
lessons tor enforcement ami presentation, adapted
to such nn occasion, is a most difficult task. We
wcro thcroforo agreeably surprised nt the interest
which this speech |>ov<esacd. It was well-written
ami forcibly delivered. The stylo of the speaker
is bold, manly, ntid "dignified. All Mr. Carlisle
wants is piactice to make a good and effective
speaker.
Next, the oration of Mr. W. Max Martin, of
Uieblaud District, on a subject of great novelty and
uncommon interest in lb* warmer regions of these
States. 1 lis theme was the Culico Flag. Kvery
person smiled as it was announced, for every body
knew that nothing serious Could comu out of a subject
of that class. Merrily did the speech flow,
too, from the speaker, and merrily did the crowd
stamp, npplaud, and laugh. The patriarchs of the
a-scmb!ugc had their hearts so delighted and their
| gravity so disturbed, that lliujTturned restlessly on
their chairs, to disguiso tho mirthful emotions that
agitated their bosoms. Not only were the sentiments
Volatilizing to all seriousness, but they were encased
in such language of poesy, fun,ami humor, that you
wcro charmed whilo you were amused. It was a
product of genius, as well as a vase of rare flowers,
of rich perfumes, and brilliant colors. It was a relief
to ilia min i, after the previous addresses, to hear
something so tangible, bo engaging, eo ethereuli/.ing
to the heart. The burden of tho 6peech was,

to the various forms of utility of which
it is susceptible. Not only s?, but that its producers

could over enable it to fulfil its destiny. After the
more weighty arguments were delivered, the
speaker appealed to tho ladies, whom, as ho aid,
it was peculiarly tho province of calico to adorn.

are satisfied that tho argument* were well-aimed,

incinbcred as a bright feature in the Commencement
exercises of Woflbrd College, 1S57. Ltnl came
Mr. Charles Petty, of our District, to whom was
assigned the duty of making an address lip in tho
duties mid ndvantages of educated tnen, (a subject
of his own selection,) and to deliver the Valedictory.
With the Subject-matter of the oddres we wore
much pleased. It showed a thoughtful, well-balanced
mind ?a sound perception and discriminating
judgment. There was nothing like gossamer work
alrout it. It was a serious production, upon a serious
subject. The maimer of Mr. Putty is very
uniform?smooth and unexceptionable. Tho Valedictory
of Mr. Petty was mournfully grave; especially
those portions that referred to tho Faculty and
his fellow -students. The whole speech was a welltimed,
hearty effort. In his remarks to the citizens
he uttered this truth, that between them and the
College there existed the most nmicablo relations
