THE TAUY'TBOOK.
With commendable promptness, CJodey's Lady's
Look f?r November is on our table, and a superb
No. it is. It is fi.lcd with everything interesting to
those catered?for engravings, fashion plates, crochet,
worsted, and embroidery patterns, directions j
to make bonnets and cut dresses?in short, all in- :
formation useful and ornamental may be found in \
its pages. While the l;terary excellence of the Look j
is fully maintained, Godcy has so improved upon 1
himself as to make his popular monthly an iustructor
in all that is useful and beautiful in the decorative
art. It is pre-ominently a Indies' book, and no
one should he without it.

orders and money.

THE ELECTIONS
The result of the elections in Pennsylvania and
Indiana, which took place on the 14th instant, has
been anxiously looked for. AH the returns are not
yet in, although enough is known tod.tennme with
oertaintv that these .States have gone for the Democratic
party. This triumph of right principles is
the more to be reioiced over inasmuch as it was 1
nearly unexpected. It is true that many found their
faith increasing under the adverse nc?vs of the canvass,
and would not believe what teemed imminent\Vc
confess we had almost abandoned ourselves t?< I
despair, and were looking for the next act in the j
great national tragedy. But the curtain ha* risen
upon a brighter scene, and one much more fascinating
than the clash of arms and the slaughter of
brothers.
When it is remembered that abolition nnd Native
Americanism tunned a ooalition ticket in
Pennsylvania, for the avowed purpose of defeating |
the Democratic parly, and under the piettigr <>! j
victory oreibearing Mr. Buchanan in tho Presiden
tint election, wo think the full measure of a nation'* j
approbation will be awarded to the sturdy I >einocrats
of the Keystone State for their glorious exer- j
lions in defence of constitutional liberty. We I
breathe more freely now for the great result. Petui
ylvnnia, which wna regarded doubtful, and Indiana
which was not expected ii> this qunrter, have ehnng- I
ed the laec of tilings. The lowering brows and do- ;
tcrmincd visages of our ncquaiiitanoea have given ,
place to a bright and cheerful anticipation. The
trust in Providence is almost realized- and to that ;
source alone did men look for succor. It is nofaiiey
to say that a nation hung 011 the issue of the strife.
The two hosts almost intermitted effort in the inti osity
of their interi-st. And the notes of triumph are
reverberated by the deep-mouthed cannon from the
extremes of the Union. (Jod grant that this he but
the premonition of the Itli of November!
Ri'ssn\rmicY.
The Emperor Alexander, now thnt lie is crowned
and firmly seated u|><>n his throne, has issued a
manifesto, declaring his policy as regards fJreece 1
and Naoh-s. He views with concern the inlcrfcr- I
once of France ami England 10 control tin* fortum n !
of ill -se States, and, on principle of European
intervention in the affairs of Turkey, avows his
readiness to extend advice and exhortation t gov
ernments whose internal affairs are not administered
in a wcll-rogulnud manner. Hut he is unwilling
to carry llto principle of interference further,
or permit others to do so. The policy thus enunciated
has special reference to the attempt to con- : '
trol Greece and Naples hy military pow?r on the (
l>nrt of France and England, and gives little ;?ssu- ,
ranee of permanent jnace brtwecti these three
European governments.
Tliis manifesto of the Czar excites considerable |
i emarU and dissatisfaction in England ami France, i
It is regarded with astonishment; and the London j
Post, the olHcial paper, expresses well iilfeetcd mii prise
that a power, itself convietod by till Europe, : ,
should rise to teach, to warn, and to threaten the
powers with whom peace has been made.
?su-SiaTi.<a?Mr. Fillmore, a* every one t
knew lie would, lias accepted the Whig nomination
for the Presidency, lately tendered to him hy
the Baltimore Convention. In accepting it he ad- I
mils that many wings are supporting Fremont, and
others Mr. Buchanan, lie charges both these par- ' '
tics with "sowing the seeds of alienation and dis j
tt ost between different sections o( this our common
country, and waging a sectional warfare tending to
weaken, if not destroy, the Union ol these State*."
There is a degree ?>f self-snfticieiiey and sell glori- |
ficalion in this position wholly incomprehensible to
our common sense. Mr. Fillmore, whether inten- 1
tionally or ignormitly we know not, stands in the |
way, to some extent? and that the extent of his
ability?of the only truly national man in the field. 1
11 is friends had the audacity nnd venality to fn*

the words quoted above, and thus infamous !

liRKIT BRITAIN ENCOURAGING ABOLITION. |
FROM TIIK RICHMOND KNUI/RRR. 1 j
IA>ni?ON, Sept. 93, I80G. |
It becomes iny painful duty to transmit lo you
intelligence of a startling nature.
In several of my letters I have informed you that
evidences of jiii uumistakcnblo character iiad been,
Iroin time to time, nflbrdad hm of n determination 1
on tlie |>art of J'.,xetcr Hull to employ all the menus '
nt its disposal to secure the election of the Uluck v
Republican ticket. I
British intervention is now openly avowed on be | 1
half of Kansas. The Timet of yesterday morning, u
in its lender, gives uii emphatic expression of whut c
it considers to be British duty ?>n the subject. The r
cotie'ud ng paragraph is couched in the following ^
language.
" We inay expect to hear, then, before long, of 1
, new movements in the Northern Statin of the
Union. More than this, such a con test as this can- t
not convulse the United Sta'.ca without exciting j
| feelings amongst ourselves. The British public (not j
, Uxetcr Hull) nre at present entirely mute on the *
subject of Kansas, simply because not one man in j
leu knows what Kansas is, or where it is, or w hat ,
people arc lighting about. When it is once under- ! (
stoxlthatth.it struggle iuvolvcs a t cacti on against
the principle of human freedom, the propngundism ^ '
of slavery, the threatened revival of a cause on
which the nut anal hatred is aodeeply fixed. Kngli.-h
feeling will undoubtedly awake, and Knglish
sympathy will everywhere back up 'Mlic North.''
We are interested part ee in the contest. Slavery '
cannot trample on America without d set edit to the
Anglo-Saxon name and the downfall ol the b'ast <
j that the AiibI > Saxon name never letrogrades."
It was in Kxeter llall, in 1814, that a Boston
Abuiitioiiist sirred in a set speech, that it was "the I
duty of Imperial Kngland to tell the United States, <
in fi stincl terms, tint slavery mu?t be abol shed."
Hut "Imperial Kngland" had not the courage then
to announce that "we are in.created parties in Uncontest."
Tlnrc Wi n t o much patriotism tin n in I
the North for her to espouse the cause of the Alio- |
lilionists in Massachusetts mid elsewhere. They |
ilid not constitute, nt that time, asufliciemly formi }
dnble party militant t-> render it altogether safe for
"Imperial Kuglutid" to "back theui up." The auspieious
ni 'ineiit, In-wever, has at rived for Imperial 1 ,
Kngland to cast oil" her mask. She is informed by
j the newspapers just received from li<?'.on and New j (
York, that at least three States have pronounced.
, to all intents and purposes for Abolition, and she is
' cncouinged to hope that, undi r the assurance that i
i she is an "interested" party "in the contest," all the '
, other Ueii-slaveholding Statin will bis ow their votes ' 1
. i in the same sense,
i If the utterance of such sentiments fail to arouse j ,
| the North, then is tin re no patriotism worth ealeii:
l.iting upon in its embraces, and the sooner the .
j South knows it the better for all concerned.
(Ireat Br.tain conceives that her durable security i
^ | is measurably de|?e!ldent upon a dissolution of the
I nioD. She is a ten .lied spectator at our rising ,
j greatness. Aceotding to our ratio of increase since I
the heginn ng of tin- pri ?< ul century, our population
. j will amount in 1900 to 1 Oil,000,000 ol inhabitant!-!
Such a future completely orershudows the brightest
