The letter was drawn out in answer to n request to allow his name to he used as a candidate lor the Vice Presidency, which he declines. lie considers Pierce, IJuchanan, or Douglas ! worthy tho conlidenco of the South, but thinks tlio South owes it to the fidelity of President Pierce to support his re-nomination: "II however, it shall bo found, as many sup|s>?<j is tlio fact, that President Pierce cannot unite the northern democracy, or if the party shall determine . to adhere to the one-term system as tlio wisest mid safest usage, then tho necessity which may constrain the selection of some other statesman will not compromise the South. No man's personal wishes should stand in the way of tho success of the party; and I know President Pierce well enough to be satisfied that he would not desire to do so. His past history should exempt liiiu from a suspicion so unjust to his rcpututidti.
