Au adjourned Kansas meeting was held !
on Monday last at this place. Much inter- ,
est was manifested, and we yet hope that
our citizens will do something worthy of
themselves in this imp- ' ,v mailer.
Col. F. Y> . Pickens spoke to the rc-oluNons
he pr<h?cnted in the finest style of
his effective oratory. His speech was characterized
by the Ability of a finished slates ;
man nud the independence of h true rcpub
lican.
Wo should have been pleased with the
opportunity of publishing this eloquent
effort in extctwo, but must content ourself
with a tneagro synopsis. The distinguished
spcakor traced our difficulties, the biltcrnoas
of present factions, and the confusion
in the country, to compromises that had
been made a substitute for the constitution,
which was a compact between States.
These compromises were the work of majorities
iu Congress, and substituted the
rulo of discretion iu a inajorityfor the fixed
law of the Constitution. Any people would
sink into imbecility who lived under the
discretion of one man, or of many men, instead
of chartered law, fixed by ascertained
compacts. There was the evil. It first
commenced in the Ordinance of '87, made
by Virginia and tho General Government;
wnd then again was repealed in what is
commonly called the Missouri Compromise. I
lie illustrated the nature of that com pro- i
misc. Next came the Tariff compromise I
of 1833, which was violated shamelessly by :
the act of '42, which destroyed the faith of '
parties and demoralized public virtue.
Again, there was tho compromise admit-!
ting California, by which act a noble teni- j
lory had been seized below 30 dog. 30, !
-which according to the Missouri Com pi o- j
miso ia spirit and good faith belonged to the !
South. It was this infamous measure that
completed tho debauch of tho whole couu- i
try. We bore it, and have sunk deeper into j
difficulty.
And then, to remedy all, tho Nebraska
Compromise again is made, repealing the '
80 dcg. 80, lino and opening (as was sup- j
posed by innny at the North) all tho couu 1
try to be seized and appropriated, by the
populous North under what is called squatter
sovereignly, lint in Kansas wo '

their own Abolition Gorcrnor had given
his seal to a lawfully returned Legislature '
who were with us as to interest and rights. !
And now, if wo are to bo driven from it
without thospiiit to appeal to arms and the ,
Gcd of Battles if need be, wo shall deserve I
our degraded destine. If wo refuse to j
stand by the gallant, the noble Atchison, 1
who has hung out the bannci upon the j
outer wall, tben will the chain bo drawn
closer and closer around us, and wo shall
polish like mice in mephiiie gas under :
an exhausted receiver.
If the lower house of Congress sanction all
this by a deliberate vote, the lime will have !
passed when we can appeal to the Constilu
lion. That House holds the parse strings
of the Confederacy, a power expressly granted
by the Constitution where it declares
that "all revenue bills shall originate in the j
House of Ib'prcscutativcs." There will be !
nothing left us but an appeal t?< the Slates
?to the organized power of the States?to !
the noble "OKI lX'ininion," the mother of
States?to Georgia, who now is making
such strides towards power and empire?
to the whole South in short, that they
wonld protect the President and the Senate,
tare the Constitution and thel'nion under
it save the w hole country if possible and
if this be not possible, at leas! save ourselves
in the last result.

" Vampire," which was briefly described
in last Saturday's issuoj ran oft* the
track near Puterson during an experimeti
tal trial trip oc Friday, while running at
a rate judged to have been about eiyhty
miles }>er hour! Fortunately no harm resulted
either to the machine.or its passengers;
the absence of any following train,
even of a tender, conducing very much to
the safety of such experiments at this extraordinary
speed. T lie machine, it wiil he
recollected, is impelled by I.gated air, or
rather by both heated air and steam, in a
manner invented by Mr. Phincas Bennett,
and is, wo think, the fii>t locomotive ever
tried with hot air as a motor in nnv form.
li is, taken lordlier, a very remarkable construction.
It lias cost, up to the present
time, about $40,000, but lias never been
altered in any material point from its 01 initial
design. It lias no tender, and carries
its engineer on is back, or rather on its
side, near tho forward end. Its weight, in
running order, is forty otic tons, and fnel
enough for a trip of 300 miles weighs only
about three tons more, and is carried in its
c;1J>?cious furnace as a single chinge. The
working out of the principle has been most
skilfully executed; ^hole credit of this
being due, we believe, lo Mr. William K.
Thomas, one of the principal draughtsmen
at tho Novelty Works. The speed made
at the moment of leaving the track, as
above noted, indicates what the principle
is capable of accomplishing, and wc cannot
n-press a hope that the sc-iious practical
ciiiHcullics alluded to in our former notice
