Supplies lor tlic Year
of 1873.
BE it enacted by the Mayor and Aldermen
of the City of Greenville, in Council assembled,
and by the authority of the snme :
That a Tax to cover tho period from
January 1st, 1873, to January 1st, 1874, for tho
sums and in the manner hereinafter mentioned,
shall bo raised and paid into tbo publio
Treasury of tho City of Greenville, by the first
day of March next, for the uso and service
thereof.
Skctioh 1. On each Ono Hundred Dollars
of assessed valuo of Real Estate and Personal
Property, the sum of Filty cents.
Roal Estate Stoolcs, Goods and Chattels
Sold at Auction.
Soc. 2. There shall be paid quarterly, Two and
a balf per cent, upon all sales at Auction, on all
Goods, and One per cent, on all Chattels nod
Reul Estate and"Stocks of ovcry description,
except on sales made by order of Court or process
of law, or by Executors and Administrators.
Goods, Waro> and Merchandise 8old on
Consignment.
Sec. 3. There shall be paid by all merchnnts
or others, Ono Half of one per cent, upon sales
s>f all Goods, Wares and Merchandise sold rn
Consignment, made from the 1st day of Jan*
uary, 1873. to tho 1st day ol January, 1874,
the ubovc Tax to bo paid quarterly.

See. 4. That each and every mulo person of
Twenty-one years of age and upwards, oilier
than members of the Firo Deportment, Ordained
Ministers, nnd Students, shall pay on
or before the 1st dny of March next, Two
Dollars for Road and Street Exemption ; nnd
if any person liable to this Tax shall fail to
mnke payment at the time specified, he shall
he held liable to work on the streets of the
City for six days, under the direction of the
noting oveisecr of the streets ; any person refusing
or neglecting to obey tko summon,
shall be fined at the discretion of tho Council,
said fine to bo collected by Execution ; and it
shall be tho duty of the City Clerk and City
Police to report to the Council, all defaulters
under either of tho clauses of the section. '

Sec. 5. There shall be piid Thirty cents on
the Hundred Dollars of gross income of Jlrokcrs
and Hankers, and all income derived
from the Commission ltusiucss.or the practice of
tho professions of Law, Medicine and Denti.-try,
and fVom the business of Dsguerreotyping,
Ambrotyping and Photographing, within the
limits of the City, the amount of Income to he
estimated from the 1st dny of January, 1873,
to the 1st day of January, 1874, the Tax upon
the same to be paid quarterly.

Soc. 6. There shall be paid Ten Dollars on
each four-horse Omnibus or Hack ; Six Dollars
on each Cnrriago drawn by two or more
horses, run for conveyance of passengers or
hire; Three Dollars on each ono horse Huggy,
Gig or Sulky, kept for hire; Twenty Dollars
on each four-horse Wagon; T^cn Dollars on
each two-h<?rse Wagon, Dray or Cart, and
Seven Dollars on each one-horse Wagon, Dray
or'Cart, run for,hire. The Taxes on Omnibuses,
Carriages, Hacks, Buggies, Wagons,
Drays, Carts, Ac., kept for hire, shall be paid
before thoy are allowed to run t Provided, That
nothing herein contained shall bo construed so
as to extend to Wagons, Carts or oilier Vehicles

dealer who sells hy the quart or larger quantity,
One Hundred Doilwrst each (Irocer or
Druggist shall bo granted a license to sell Liquors
by tho bottle, not loss than Three-half
t'ints, upon the payment of an annual Tax of
Fifty Dollars, payable quarterly in advance:
Provided, the .Liquor so sold shall not be
drank on the premises where sold, by any other
than a Retail Dealer. All applications tor
Retail or Bottle License, must first be made to
the Clerk of Council. Bond required in tha
penal sum of Ono Thousand Dollars, to bo approved
by Committee on Securities, and classed
by the Committee on Classification, and the
license for all dealers in liquor shall eover the
year expiring on tho 1st day of October, 1873.
Each day Bar Rooms aro closed by order of
Council, they shall be credited on theirlieense,
First-class Dealer, Ton Dollars; for Secondclass
Doolcrs, Six t)ollors.

Sec. 13. And be it farther ordained,^That
nny person or persons who shall fail, neglect
or refuse to make a return to the City Clerk
on oath of all his, her or their Taxable Property,
Income, Sales, Receipts or any or all
other things taxed by this Ordinance, and pay
the Tax thereon imposed, within the time specified
by this Ordinance, the Clerk of the Council,
assisted by tho Assessors of theJCity, are
hereby authorised and requested to asses such
person or persons for his, her or thoir property
or other things taxed by this Ordinance,.
