The sonnet of our immediate feljw
countryman, Mr. Tiinrod, on
n "Autumnal day in Carolina,"r
i coupled with one of Mr. Bryant,
>t Massachusetts, on "October."?
?he theme is the same. The anhors
are of Massachusetts and
Carolina. It will be admitted that
he poctn of the representative of
Massachusetts poetry is indeed
ender, spiritual, ana delicate.?
Chat the verse is musical, tho exiression
felicitous, and, above ull,
hero is the unction, the passion,
vhicli is the soul alike ot all true
iloquenco and poetry. The quiet,
Ireamy, spiritual brightness and

vhicli brood with such a soothing

iiiiMuiiH, ccriuiiuy must nave passd
into the mind of the poet, to
iavo found such a life like and
aitliiul expression in his verse.
Wc quote the 6onnet to express
nr admiration, our great admiraion,
of its exquisite beauty, and
o add that, before the sonnet of
ur Carolina poet was written, we
irould venture the suggoosion that
t had no equal from the Amcrinn
muse. If, when the poem of
Ir. Timrod .in read, and is corntared

['hat lie may think. Wo shall snblit

Hut here it must he added, in
nstice to our Carolina poet and to
/urolina itself, that Air. Timrod,
nlike Mr. Bryant, had no advance
of a severe literal} training,
lis father, unlike the father of Air.
Iryaut, was unlettered ; and, inlead
of elaborate cult tire of a schol

A Rum Onk.?The celebrated
Sam Brick, of Augusta, Me., made
a speech lately, in the Augusta reform
club, which for both pathos
and humor,1s not often excelled.
It is necessary to note the fact that
Mr. Brick lost a portion of his
nose some years since by a surgical
operation. In concltidihg his
remarks, the speaker 6aid :
When I think of what I am.
and wliat I might tiavo been, I
can well 6ay that ruin has done
much for me. Little good and
much evil. It has made mo a
handsome man; it has restrained
me from extravagant living, costly
clothing, valuable jewelry, fast
horses, seaside mansions and
yachts. It has prevented me from
being called a bloated bond holder.

It has relieved me of a family and
a home. Washing days are unknown
to me, and my night key

to wre6t from me what they

thing I have lost after a serios of
years, is a lew inches of my nose,
which I don't miss. Yes, t urn has
done much for me.
