Extraction of a Ball.
Dr. H. V. WvsTMoaKLAND informs as that
he bad a ball extracted from his right sida,
jnst below the shoulder blade, about four
weeks ago. Dr W. reeeived this ball into his
person, at Upperville, Virginia, on the 21st
of June, 1863. It baa remained in its plaee
of lodgment from theo ttill extracted, and
during all the time gave him more or leu
pain, running and diacharging matter. The
ball, until about twelve months ago, conld oot
be found, but eventually it was reached. At
various times, the wound was probed, and
especially efforts were made to find it during
Dr. W'a attendance at the Medical
College, (he having attaoded medical lectures
about four year ago, since receiving
tbe wound,) at Atlanta, by the Professor of
Surgery. Some six weeks since, the wound
commenced to inflame, and became very
red, immediately over the ball. Upon
furthsr examination, efforts were made for
removing the bullet, by several physicians,
who again probed the wound, anJ at once
were satisfied that it could be removed.?
This they did on the 8th of May last, much
to tha relief of the patient, who had contideral
uneasiness from it. Chloroform was
used during the operation, and Dr. W. now
feels much relieved. The lead, when it
was brought to light, after being hidden
for nearly blue years, anon turned to a copper
color. We congratulate our friend on
the result.

We have examined two bundles of Oats,
which have been sent to tbe office of Mr. Jtff

plantation of Mr. Wis. Goldsmith, of this
County, twelve mile* below the City. One
bundle is of the White Red Rust-Proof variety,
and the other of the Black kind. The first
is about three and a half feet high, and toe
latter one foot lets. They are splendid tights
to look at, and thow what can be produced
through eareful selection of teed and good cultivation.
Both of theae Oats were sown early in

as indispensable to tbrir successful cultivation.

The Masonic OrdJr in Greenville.
Recovery Lodge, Mo. 31, A. F. M., in our
City, is in a flourishing condition, we take
pleasure in stating. There are a good many
accessions to It of some of the best young men
herd, and It is engaged in various acts of
charity. For several years past tbe Order has
supported one of Its eldest members, who, from
old age and the dlsastrious results of the war,
baa been left destitute. The Lodgo has also
made arrangements to educate a young lady,
daughter of one of their deceased brethren.?
Besides these commendablo works, assistance
is rendere'd to various orphans and widows in
need. It is pleasant to know that there exist
benevolent orders of this character in our
midst, and all can but unite in wishing great
strength and growth to them.

Messrs. Cower, Cox A Markley, having

Immense Forces of Human Life
The amount Of heat-/oree wbicb is produced
annually in tbe body of an adult man, ii sufficient
to raise neariy 30,000 pounds of water
imtn iuo ireeiing point 10 toe nulling point.
Mc<kauicul force is also produced. Every
year the heart contracts and dilutee 40,ObO,OUU
tiiues, each time with a force estimated as
equal to the pressure of 13 pounds?thousands
of tons of blood being thus annually driven
through the circulatory system. Nor arc
these involuntary actions all. Force is gene<
rated as #?ll lor a thousand forms of volunia
ry action. Thus a healthy laboring man is
estimated to l>e able to exert a force equal to
raising the weight of his body through 100,000
leet in a day. In strict correspondence
to this outcome of force is the internet change
in the various tissues, which accompanies it.
Tho living body, has been compared t? a waterfall.
While its apparent lorin remains unchanged,
its constituent particles are in a
state of swift, unceasing transition. The joint
result of the continual ingoing current through
the stomach, etc., etc,, and of tbe corresponding
outgoing cut-rcnf through tho kidneys,
to., etc., is, that tbe whole bo man body it
completely renovated in the space of about s
month. Now the great motoi principle in this
unceasing flux?whieh is the measure of health
and the very essence ol life?is tbe digestive
faculty. If tho reader fails in the lull
possession of this faculty, and fails consequently
in tbe full possession of health and of lite
let him try Dr. Uottlieb Fiscb's Bitters. Lei
him take a wine-glass full before and alfet
each maal. He will very soon experience rejjyf.
