CAMDEN, December ftth, 1871.
Dear Sir : In reply to your inquiry concerning my use of the Stobu Phosphate in the
present year, I will stute what I did, and give you the result.
On the 15th of May last I planted twelve acres of cotton, to which I made a heavy appli*
cation of octton seed and barnvard manure combined. On the other aix, at the time of plant,
ing, I put nothing at all, not having received then the Stono Soluble Phosphate. On the
15th of June I applied the Stono, at the rate of 260 pounds to the acre, to the last six acres,
after the cotton was all up. The manner of the application was as follows : With the eaehorse
Watt plough the cotton waa barred off as near as practicable and tbe phosphate pat in,
and immediately covered by throwing back the earth taken away by the first ploughing.
The result was as follows: On the first six acres I gathered in the seed about 800 pounds
of cotton to tbe acre; from the last six. to which nothing but the Stono Soluble ttusno hud
been applied, I gathered an average of 1,200 pounds per acre. Tbe two paveels planted
were in the same field, separated only by a row. Tbe cultivation was tbe same.
Very truly, yours, Ac., JAltfES CHE8NIJT.
To J. D. Aikkn, Esq., Otn. Agent Stono Phoephate Oamp'my, Gfiarketon, S. C.
EDGEFIELD, ?. ., November 27, 187V.
I used two tons Stono Dissolved Phosphate, composted with an equal Weight of cotton
seed, on my cotton th s yoar. It certainly doubled tbe yield, making on ordinary lanJs three
bales to every four acres on which H was used. In snine test rows an equal weight of Phosphate,
with two other fertilisers costing nearly donble the money, produoed more cotton.?
There was |to rnst on the cotton under whpdi the phosphate was used, except on a few small
spots qf wet, springy land, whilst the cotton under which the other ipnre costly fertilisers
were, rusted early and badly. J. W*. TOMPKIN8.
