CAMDEN, Dmnlicr 6tb, 1871. Dear Sir : In reply to your inquiry concerning my use of the Stono l'hosphato in the present year. I will slate what I did, and give you the result. On the 15th of May last { planted twelve acres of cotton, to which I made a heavy appli* cation of cottonseed and harnynrtl manure combined. On the otli. r six, at the time of plant lug, I put mithing at nil, nol having received then the Stono Soluble Phosphate. On the 16th of Juhe I tfpplied the Stono, at the rate of 250 pounds to the ncrc, to the last six acres, alter the, cotton war nil up, The manner ol the1 application was ns follows. With the onehorse WHft plough'the cotton was hiirred off as tier us practicable and the phosphate put in, and immediately covered hy throwing b:t*k tlie earth taken r.way by the first ploughing. Tho result'was at follows: 0? tka first six acres I gathered in the seed nhout 800 pounds of cotton to the acre; from the last six. to which nothing but the Stono Soluble tiuano had hccu applied, I gathered ?. uvprifu ol 1,2Q0 , pounds per acre. The two parcels planted | wore in tills same Held, separated (inly by a r >w. The cultivation was the same. ' d .1 ? A'feryTruly, yours, Ac..' JAMES C1IESNUT. To J. I used two tons Stono Dissolved Phosphate, composted with an equal weight of cotton seed, on my cotton th year. It certainly doubled tho yield, making on ordinary lands throe hates to ovcfy four nprns <>6 which it was usod.i In some test rows an equal woiglit of Phosphate, wi|b two ot|jr f^nlgitprs costing Dearly double the money, produced more cotton.? i There was no rust on the cotton under which the phosphate was used, rxcept on a few small spots of wet,;gpringY,landi whilst Uia cott<n> under which the other more cost I v fertilisers Wkre, rusted eXidy and ffnuriy.
