i : CAMDEN, December fitb, 1871.
Drar Sir : In reply to your inquiry concerning my use of the Stono Phosphato in the
present year. I will state what I did and ??? ??'
? -- J"" ??? ?'??
On the 15th of May last I plained twelve acre* of cotton, to wbicli I mnde a heavy nppli?
cation of cotton seed and barnyard roanure combined. Oo the other six, at the time of planting,
I put nothing at all, not having received then tire Stono Soluble Phosphate. On the
]5tb of Jttne I applied the 8t<>no, at the ruto of 2.'.0 pounds to the acre, to the last six acres,
after the cotton woe all up. The man nor ot the application was as folio ws ; With the ouohorse
Watt.plough the cotton was burred off ns neiras practicable and the phosphate put in,
and immediately covered by throwing back tho earth taken uway br the ffrat ploughing.
The result was as follows: On the first six acres I gathered in the seed about 800 pounds
of cotton to the ncro } from the lust six. to which nothing hut the Btono Soluble Guano had
been applied, I gathered an average of 1,200 pounds per acre. The two parcels planted
were in the suuto field, separated only by a row. The cultivation was the same.
Very truly, yours. Ac., JAM KS CHBSNIJT.
To J. D. Aikbx, Esq., Otn. Aytnt Stotto PKoiphat? Company, Charleston, S. C.
EDGEFIELD, 8. C., November 27, W1.
I used two tons Stono Dissolved Phnephnte, composted witb nn equal weight of cotton
seed, on my cotton th s year. It eertoinly doubled the yield, making on ordinary lanJa tbree
hales to every four acres on whicb it was used, lo some test rows an equal weight of Pliosphato,
with two other fertilisers costing ueurly double the mouay, produced raoro cotton.?There
was no rust on the cotton under which tho phosphate was used, except on a few small
spots of wet, springy land, whilst the cotton under fvhich the other mors costly fertilisers
were, rusted early and badly. J. W. TOMPKINS.
