Deitructive Fire in Abberil e.
Abbbvillk, January 19, 1872.
Editor Daily Union?About 2 o'clock tb>S
A. M., a fire broke out in the kitchen adjoin1
ing L. II. Russell's premises. The building
9 being composed of dry wood, there was no vis'
ible means whatever of extinguishing the
" flames ; in fact, the occupants had barely time
' to escape from the flames, some of them escap9
jng in their night clothing. The flames quick- <
ly spread to the adjoining buildings, and the
s entire square (on the same side) being built of: {
s wood, was quickly lsid in ashes. The Court
* House was also destroyed and it was only (
? through the united efforts of the citizens that
t the entire village ef Abbeville was not con- '
. sumed. As it is, however, the main business
portion of the town is destroyed. Tho main
, business store (John Knox's) was burnt to the
, ground. The hotel?the Marshall House?with
the new and handsome cupolA, also, fell a victim
to the fiery monster.
The great Republican mart, well known as
tho " Jem Store," was destroyed. In this
ease, however, an insurance was in their keep- (
, ing to cover all losses.
Taking a rough estimate of the losses and
insurance, out ot the entire $80,0t0 destroyed
not more than half is insured. The Bfarshall (
House was not insured for more than one-sixth
| the loss ; and Knox's wholesale astablishment
, was not insured for move thai) one-tenth.
I There is a current report on the streets that
? a lady and child has been burnt. This rumor,
however, is contradicted by some. I will acquaint
you with the details as tbey are ascer,
tained.

A Family Medicine
We call the especial attention of our readers
to the advertisements of thnt favnrablo home (
remedy, Perry Davis' Pain Killer. It has
been before the public over thirty year*, and '
probably has a wider and better reputation
than any other proprietary medicine of tha
present day. At this period there ore but few
unacquainted with the merits of the Pain Killer;
but while some extol it as a liniment, they
know bat little of its power in easing pain
when taken internally, while others use it internally
with great success, but are equally
ignorant of its healing virtues when applied
externally.' We, therefore, wish to say to all t
that it is equally suecessfal whether used in,
ternally or externally, and it stands to-day,
unriyalled, by all the great catalogue of Family
