Deitructive Fire in Abberil e. Abbbvillk, January 19, 1872. Editor Daily Union?About 2 o'clock tb>S A. M., a fire broke out in the kitchen adjoin1 ing L. II. Russell's premises. The building 9 being composed of dry wood, there was no vis' ible means whatever of extinguishing the " flames ; in fact, the occupants had barely time ' to escape from the flames, some of them escap9 jng in their night clothing. The flames quick- < ly spread to the adjoining buildings, and the s entire square (on the same side) being built of: { s wood, was quickly lsid in ashes. The Court * House was also destroyed and it was only ( ? through the united efforts of the citizens that t the entire village ef Abbeville was not con- ' . sumed. As it is, however, the main business portion of the town is destroyed. Tho main , business store (John Knox's) was burnt to the , ground. In this ease, however, an insurance was in their keep- ( , ing to cover all losses. Taking a rough estimate of the losses and insurance, out ot the entire $80,0t0 destroyed not more than half is insured. The Bfarshall ( House was not insured for more than one-sixth | the loss ; and Knox's wholesale astablishment , was not insured for move thai) one-tenth.
