The Pawned Actor. <
Tlio celebrated tragedian, Mr. 1
Cooke, was always fond of a frolic
on his benefiet night, declaring i
that he never took liberties with
his friends at any other time. It
once happened, during an engagement
at Philadelphia, that on such
U11 occasion lit* wna nlini-t <1 f mnn

ey, and at a loss to raise tiio wind
lor the accustomed breeze. In
this dilem.ua lie started up town
in a speculative mood, determined
to " inspirit" in some way or
other. Having reached the corner
of Cailowhill and Eighth 1
streets, ho cast his eyes toward the 1
Deleware, and perceived one of
those enticing signs of three golden
balls. lie turned the corner,
and entering the fatal door, addressed
the man behind the couuter
thus:
" My name is Cooko. This is
my benefit night. The manager
can't do without mo. I am up for
Richard the Third. I want some
liquor. I have no incney. Now,
I propo6o to hypothecate my royal
person for ten dollars, and you
may lay ine on one of yonr
shelves."
The joke was a queer one, and
the pawn-broker paid the ten dollars,
and Cooko was laid up. The
theatro that night was crowded,
and at 7 o'clock the manager
came forward to apologize, stating
that, with the consent of the audi- |
once, the performance would com
mence with a farce, lie had sent .
in different directions but was un- '
able to find Mr. Cooke, in the
city. He presumed the tragedian
would bo forthcoming in the]
course of the next half hour. As I
the manager retired he was told <
that a boy wished to see him in i
the green-room. He found the t
boy, who presented a note written
in ciphers, which he at length (
translated thus:
M My dear : I am pawned
for ten dollars : send and redeem {
mo, or it will bo impossible fori.
Richard to be himself to-niirht.? I.
Yours, Cooke.
The manager startod immediately
after the fixed star, and 1
found him nicely shelved,* with a ?
]>late of crackers and checso and I
a bottle of brandy by him. In f
the button hole of his coat was t
a paper, marked " No. 1,278, f
pawned for $10." The amount ^
was paid, a hack called, and Mr.
Cooke and the manager returned |
to the theatre, where the former <]
had just time to dress and com- c
mencc, "Now is the winter of our t
discontent," etc. It is said that he f
never played J&ichard better or |,
received more applause.
